shopinthehotel.Iusu- ally sampled small pieces of the sweetened breads. I am not a sausage per- son. Bratwurst is only one of 1,500 hundred kinds of wurst in Germany. A main difference is that since the 13th century the Germans have strictly controlled what goes into their sau- sage. No American hot dogs there. Since my trip to Ger- many in 1998, cafes and restaurants seemed to use larger cups for cof- fee. There is a real coffee culture in Germany with Germans drinking more coffee than beer. I find that difficult to believe as I saw the tall glasses of beer being consumed during dinner. I ordered the ½ size. I had cof- fee for breakfast. It was brewed in a large pot and even though much stron- ger than the coffee I fix at home, it was not bitter. With a somewhat healthy breakfast, I was fueled for the morning. When I went to pur- chase the Berlin Card for 21.50 euros, the young man asked me a question I am never asked in the United States. He knew I was from the United States. He asked me if I were German. I told him my grandfather had emi- grated from the Ukraine, via Berlin, before World War I. With the card, I was prepared to use the un- derground in Berlin. The next morning after a de- licious breakfast I could walk three blocks to the Stadtmitte station to travel on the underground to meet the Insider Tour in front of McDonald's near the famous Berlin Zoo. I was to be there at 9:30. I found out how easy it was to get around Ber- lin. To reassure myself, I asked a young woman near me if I was on the right train and she con- firmed I was. I got off the train and found the McDonald's. One of the tour's requirements was to have a pass for the un- derground as we would travel to the part of the city where we would con- tinue our five hour walk- ing tour. The Insider Tour group served several language groups. I found it inter- esting to be among people who spoke Japanese, Ara- bic, Spanish and probably other languages I didn't recognize. I was disap- pointed when the group from Spain found its tour in Spanish and we sep- arated. In front of that large McDonald's I met 6-foot 9-inch Barnaby who did not need a sign or um- brella to be seen. He was an English young man from London who had been a Berliner for 7 years. On the tour he was asked why he was here and he answered, "I love Berlin!" He was a very knowledge- able tour guide who read widely and had even seen a movie I had just watched on Netflix, "A Woman in Berlin." Next, I will share some of the main sites of Berlin including the Brandenburg Gate, Check Point Charlie, the Reichstag, two memo- rials that moved me emo- tionally, the famous Per- gamum Museum, and ad- ditionally, some of my favorites of the beauti- ful modern architecture of Berlin. My question this week is what do you know about the Berlin Wall? I was surprised to find out that there were two Berlin walls. The new, outstand- ing movie starring our Tom Hanks got it right in "Bridge of Spies." Aboutthecontributor: Leonard (Len) Stohler is a historian by degree. He taught in the local schools from 1969-1995. He served on the Red Bluff Union School Board for 16 years. On a Danube River cruise late October last year he had to return due to the illness of his traveling companion after seeing only Budapest, Bratislava and Vienna for one day each. He wanted to return "closer to the ground" and so returned on an independent trip to the cities of Budapest, Vienna, Prague and Berlin from September 7-22. He walked in these cities and rode public transportation, enjoying some of the many attractions and historic sites and talking to a few of the citizens.
