Honorroll The Red Bluff Union Ele- mentary School District will be holding a public hearing regarding the need to apply for a waiver with the Cali- fornia Department of dis- trict to provide a modified day for its Transitional Kin- dergarten classes. The district is proposing a half day program for its Transitional Kindergarten class. A public hearing is re- quired by the state for such a waiver. The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the District Office, 1755 Air- port Blvd. in Red Bluff. Copies of the document will be available to the pub- lic from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. be- ginning Friday at the Dis- trict Office. TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN District seeks to move to half day classes A select group of 12 Cal- ifornia State University, Chico students honed their leadership skills at a spe- cial invitation-only con- ference for math-based majors in the country's science, technology, engi- neering and math (STEM) innovation hub. The 12th annual Math- ematics, Engineering, Sci- ence Achievement (MESA) Student Leadership con- ference, themed "Cele- brating 45 Years of STEM Success," was held Oct. 2-3 at the Santa Clara Marri- ott. It offered students ex- tensive professional and leadership development through direct interaction with industry mentors and speakers. The hand-picked MESA students, all sci- ence, engineering, or math majors, represent 38 uni- versities and community colleges from across the state. The conference was fully sponsored by indus- try donations. Edison In- ternational is the lead sponsor with additional funding from AT&T, Pa- cific Gas and Electric, San Diego Gas and Electric and Southern California Gas. The Chico conference at- tendees are Jorge Alvarado, Cintia Amador, Shelby An- gel, Marcus Battraw, Avery Esteen-Taylor, Daniel Ga- mez Resendiz, Diana Gar- cia, Zachary Marin, Paola Montoya, Federico Palofox and Jorge Romero Derrick Williams. They were spon- sored by PG&E. Students participated in mock interviews, con- nected with industry rep- resentatives, heard guest speakers and attended workshops. This focus on so-called "soft skills" is a key to shaping well- rounded STEM profes- sionals. Actor and scien- tist Christina Ochoa and Pixar also gave presenta- tions. "We know that Califor- nia's economy needs more STEM workers to stay competitive," said MESA Executive Director Os- car F. Porter. "These stu- dents provide the solution to industry's need for well- trained professionals. "They were selected to attend the conference be- cause these students have strong leadership skills. This event gives them a chance to interact exten- sively with STEM profes- sionals currently working in industry," Porter said. MESA promotes STEM success for more than 28,000 educationally dis- advantaged secondary, community college and four-year college students in California through proj- ect-based learning, aca- demic counseling and ex- posure to STEM careers, so they can graduate from college with math-based degrees. Seventy per- cent of MESA high school graduates statewide went directly to college after graduation, compared to 48 percent of all Califor- nia graduates. Sixty per- cent of MESA students go on to math, science or en- gineering majors. Ninety- seven percent of MESA community college trans- fer students go to college as STEM majors. CHICO STATE STEM students connect with Silicon Valley COURTESYPHOTO The Metteer SERRF Program had a wonderful Lights On celebration. All the students participated and were able to get their pictures taken at the big apple crunch table. They made two graphs of "What is your favorite vegetable" and "What is your favorite fruit," and then they ate their apple slice. A er that, the kids had a tour of the garden and greenhouse. Another station was Rachel's Challenge where the students were able to show off their artistic skills by drawing their own unique flower on a large banner. Other stations included the career table, along with some fun, healthy games played with hula hoops. Everyone had a great time.
