MAY 27 - JUNE 2, 2015 UCW 9 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM This past year has been an excicting one for the All American Veterans Center, located on the campus of Fayetteville Technical Community College. Since the center's grand opening in June of 2014, more than 6,000 veterans have walked through its doors. What makes FTCC's Veterans Center special is experiencing the act of veterans who volunteer and work at the center going the extra mile to serve other veterans who enter the center. With FTCC being an educational institution, we strive to help veterans make the most of their educational journeys through personal enrollment assistance and veteran services, but our services reach beyond the educational realm. For example, in recognizing the value of writing and how writing can be therapeutic, we began a "Writing Can Help" program which meets twice a month on Saturdays. We also established a partnership with the Department of North Carolina Commerce/North Carolina Works for résumé writing. Volunteers from the DAV, American Legion and Patriot Outreach work weekly in the center. Recently, an additional DAV veteran/volunteer joined the center specifically for the purpose of assisting students with VA claims. The center also has partnerships/outreach relationships with the Fayetteville Vet Center, Community Blueprint, Governors Working Group in Raleigh, Partnership for Children and Alliance Behavioral Health. This networking — and more important — these relationships — formed through the All American Veterans Center reflect a wonderful example of community engagement in support of its veteran population. Another example is Transition Tech, a program introduced at the center to focus on personal growth and offering of services to help transitioning military members by providing industry-focused certificate training including development of résumés. Transition Tech training also provides a mock speed interview involving human resources professionals. In addition to Transition Tech, we are working towards a new initiative, North Carolina STRIVE (North Carolina Student Transition Resource Initiative for Veteran's Education), a collaborative workforce initiative committed to individual and community empowerment through employment opportunities. In December 2014, FTCC was selected as a top school in Military Advanced Education's 2015 Guide to Colleges & Universities which measures best practices in military and veteran education. In October 2014, FTCC was ranked number two by Military Times in its Best for Vets Career & Technical Colleges List for 2015 (a recognition received for the past two years). For the past six years, FTCC has held the distinction of being Military Friendly® by Victory Media. These efforts are evidenced by FTCC's veteran enrollment, which has exceeded 2,000 during major semesters. We have been privileged to have had several dignitaries from local, state and national areas and colleges visit with us over the past year, but at FTCC's All American Veterans Center, our veterans represent the honored guests who walk through our doors. The All American Veterans Center is located inside the General Classroom Building at 2817 Fort Bragg Road, and I can be reached at thewesm@faytechcc.edu or (910) 678-8296.
