North Carolina Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 24-30 and hurricane season begins June 1 and runs through November. Traditionally, mid-August through mid-October is the most active time for hurricanes in North Carolina. A disaster-preparedness kit should contain enough non-perishable food and a gallon of water per person, per day, to last three to seven days. County Budget Public Hearing June 2 Hurricane Season Begins June 1; Be Prepared There will be a public hearing for the recommended Cumberland County budget June 2 at 7 p.m. in the Room 118 of the Cumberland County Courthouse, 117 Dick St. The meeting will be televised live on Fayetteville Cumberland Educational TV (FCETV) Time-Warner Channel 5 and 97-3 on the digital tier. The public hearing may also be viewed live through the county website at www.co.cumberland.nc.us. The recommended budget is available for review on the county website. A new crime lab jointly funded by the City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County begins operations June 1 and is expected to speed up the disposition of court cases. Local law enforcement, court system, city and county officials held a press conference about the Southeastern Forensic Lab May 18. The crime lab will process blood alcohol testing for DUI cases as well as handle drug identification. District Attorney Billy West, Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler and Fayetteville Police Chief Harold Medlock discussed the importance of having a local lab in reducing turnaround time and the current evidence backlog. The lab will be operated by Integrated Forensic Laboratories and recently passed inspection by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board. Library Offers Summer Reading Clubs The Cumberland County Public Library and Information Center's Summer Reading Clubs begin June 1 and run through Aug. 15 at all eight branches. The annual program features clubs for children, teens and adults. This year's theme is "superheroes" and the clubs' activities include an Army birthday celebration, hero training camps, fan fiction contest, movie nights, Internet job cafes, gaming tournaments, a chess club and an anime prom.
