MAY 27 - JUNE 2, 2015 UCW 5 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Some people like to go to the beach when the weather is warm, but there is plenty of outside fun to be had locally, too. And enjoying the peace and quiet without getting sunburned is awesome. One place to get in touch with nature is the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. There is plenty to do and there are several events scheduled in the coming weeks. The botanical garden is an area near downtown that is dedicated to preserving some of the natural plant life in Fayetteville. While preserving nature, the staff also provides tours and educational workshops about the beauty of nature. The annual spring concert series gives people the chance to listen to a wide vari- ety of music while enjoying the beauty of nature. The second installment of the Spring Concert Series is set for June 11. "Some people come to the concerts because they follow the band or like the music performed; others come because they want to enjoy an evening in the garden. In some cases, it's the first time they've come to the garden, or heard live jazz or seen an upright bass," said Meg Suraci, director of marketing. Old Habits, a four-piece band that performs bluegrass, southern roots, country and folk music is the entertainment for the night. The band per- forms music that anyone can enjoy. The Raleigh-based band includes Chad Johnson, Lin Peterson, Craig Thompson and Evans Nicholson. Guests can look forward to more than a concert on the night of the con- cert. The second installment also provides a chance to meet sculptor Patrick Dougherty and view his latest creations. Dougherty is native to North Carolina, with a keen eye to the beauty of nature through his sculptures reminiscent to the Garden of Eden. Dougherty is also known as the stick man because his sculptures are built branch-by-branch to create imagery from nature itself. Each year w it h a team of volunteers follow ing his v ision, t hey create nine large sc ulpt ures t hat t a ke a tot a l of 21 days to complete. "Concert goers are exposed to the blending of nature and music. These experiences fit seamlessly with the garden's goal to transform people's rela- tionship with plants and the natural world, as well as expand their horizons through educational and cultural programs," said Suraci. The concert takes place on June 11 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. For more infor- mation, visit the website at www. capefearbg.org.
