TheAssociatedPress FOUNTAIN,COLO. Firefight- ers in Colorado have res- cued two cows that plunged through the ice on a pond. Fountain Fire Chief Da- rin Anstine says someone driving by the pond south of Colorado Springs spotted the cows' heads sticking out of the water about 30 feet from shore Tuesday after- noon. Firefighters wearing protective suits used saws to cut through 6 to 8 inches of ice and clear a channel to the shore. Anstine says the cows were able to walk out of the pond about an hour af- ter they were spotted. It's unclear how long they were in the water, but they're do- ing fine. Anstine says he's seen a lot of dogs rescued from icy ponds in his 28 years with the department, but never a cow. The event was sponsored by California State Univer- sity, Chico's College of Ag- riculture. Proceeds for the event will be used to fund the Chico State Ag Alumni Scholarship program. College of Agriculture Director of Advancement Sarah DeForest said Chico State and the Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale have built a strong relationship together over the years. The Ag Social serves as a great way for those in the industry to network, espe- cially those in the cattle in- dustry. "It's a very close commu- nity, but they don't get to see each other a lot," De- Forest said. She said one of the great aspects of Red Bluff's Bull & Gelding Sale is it brings everyone together once a year. The night featured silent and live auctions, a raffle and adult beverages. By Claire Lester About 20 Red Bluff FFA students attended a lead- ership conference in Sacra- mento Jan. 9 and 10. Underclassmen and stu- dents who had not previ- ously gone to the conference attended Made For Excel- lence, and older students at- tended the Advanced Lead- ership Academy. Both MFE and ALA con- sisted of seven hour-long sessions where California State FFA officers led activ- ities to help members grow as leaders and discover their potential. Students at- tending ALA even had the opportunity to plan a com- munity project and pitch their idea to the rest of the group. The Red Bluff FFA of- ficer team hopes to turn their plan into a reality and eventually grow fresh vege- tables for local soup kitch- ens. Both groups learned about the importance of considering the large is- sues facing people across the world as well as current challenges in the field of ag- riculture. The conference was a great learning experience for all who attended, and every moment was action- packed and full of fun. Red Bluff FFA members returned to their chapter with a new awareness and the tools they need to make a difference in the chapter, school, community and even the world.
