ByMarilynAdams OnemorningI went into the kitchen and turned on the light. It was evident that the ants had ar- rived. I had several trails meandering over my countertops. The army had invaded overnight. The wind was howling, and the rain was coming down in sheets. They were looking for shelter. How did they get in? They were streaming in through a seemingly in- visible crack. I cleaned up the coun- tertops, and then liber- ally doused the entrance area with clove oil to stop them. Then I went out- side to see how they were getting in. I stared at the black metal edging until I could see it moving. Then I doused that with my clove oil. Success, for the moment. Do you ever have thoughts invade your mind? How do they get in? Ephesians 6:16 calls them "fiery darts." It says, "Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one." Our faith quenches the fiery darts like the clove oil stopped my ant march that morn- ing. It was a perfect illus- tration to what the Holy Spirit was speaking to me just an hour before I walked into the kitchen. 2 Peter 1:5 Amplified says, "Employ every effort in exercising your faith to develop virtue (excellence, resolution, and Chris- tian energy)..." Without faith we are short- sighted. We can only see what is near us. Faith looks beyond the obvious to the only One who can help. Faith per- ceives as fact what is not yet revealed to our senses. James 1:2 tells us to rejoice in our trials. Verses 3-4 says, "Know- ing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing." It takes faith to be patient. Romans 4:20 says that Abraham did not waver in unbelief. He did not fo- cus on the obvious. He was strengthened in faith. That means that he em- ployed every effort in exer- cising his faith to develop the patience needed. Patience requires abso- lute trust. He uses our tri- als to deeply ingrain pa- tience in our character. Pa- tience is an integral part of our lives. We don't cast about wildly in our mind, but maintain inner peace as we acknowledge that everything is under God's control and impeccable timing. Impatience is a fleshly reaction. In 1 Samuel 15:19, Samuel asks Saul, "Why did you not obey the voice of the Lord?" Saul's Impa- tience was rooted in un- belief which lead to his disobedience. It is essen- tial for us to understand that patience is integral to our Christian walk. It isn't something we put on for the moment. It is part of our identity in Christ. He uses our trials to ingrain patience. We can learn from Abraham's life. As Abra- ham waited, his focus was on God's faithfulness. He kept his faith strong by praising God in his situa- tion. We glorify the Lord through our praise as we face the impossible, re- sist dialogue, and en- dure through His grace strength. Is your life invaded by sin? Jesus died on the cross for you. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." You can be set free; you can permit Him to set you free. Acknowledge to Him that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. Romans 10:9 says, "That if you con- fess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Want to stop the inva- sion in its tracks? All it takes is a little Holy Spirit clove oil — i. e., the Word of God growing in your heart. MarilynAdamsaccepted the Jesus Christ as her per- sonal Savior in 1958. A de- bilitating accident in 1977 radically changed her life. Through that crucible of affliction, the Lord wooed her into an intimate re- lationship with Him. He taught her timeless truths that sustain her, and still permeate her present teachings. GOD TALK Invasion by an army of ants MarilynAdams The public is invited to join Celebrate Recovery for a special night of testimony and worship with Remnant at 7 p.m. Feb. 6 at Bethel As- sembly of God Church, 625 Luther Road. CONCERT RemnantreturnstoRedBluff By Nicole Winfield The Associated Press VATICAN CITY The head of the U.S. Environmental Pro- tection Agency met Friday with Vatican officials who helped draft Pope Fran- cis' upcoming encyclical on ecology, evidence that the Obama administration is seeking to hitch its climate- change message onto that of the popular pope. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy told reporters that her aim in visiting was to show the Vatican how aligned President Barack Obama and Francis are on climate change. She said she wanted to stress that global warming isn't just an environmental issue, but a public health threat, and yet also a chance for economic opportunity. "I think the most impor- tant thing that we can do, working with the pope, is to try to remind ourselves that this is really about protect- ing natural resources that human beings rely on, and that those folks that are most vulnerable — that the church has always been fo- cused on, those in poverty and low income — are the first that are going to be hit and impacted by a chang- ing climate," she said. She added, however: "It's certainly not my place to dictate to the pope what he should be doing in an en- cyclical." While Pope Benedict XVI introduced solar energy to the Vatican and joined a re- forestation project aimed at offsetting the Vatican's CO2 emissions, Francis has caught the world's attention for environmentalism, and his upcoming encyclical has drawn more speculation than any papal document in memory. During his re- cent Asia trip, Francis as- serted that climate change is real and that human ac- tivity is "mostly" to blame. Environmentalists are thrilled by his involvement, but skeptics of global warm- ing — including religious conservatives in the U.S. — are irate that he's taking up the issue at all. This isn't the first time the Obama administration has highlighted shared interests with the pope: Obama credited Francis with helping mediate the thaw in U.S.-Cuban rela- tions.
