BULLSALE Schedule of events By Andre Byik abyik@redbluffdailynews.com @andrebyik on Twitter RED BLUFF Brian Smith, a Cottonwood artist whose acrylic painting was fea- tured in the Western Art Show this week at the Te- hama District Fairground, said growing up, he'd always wanted to be a cowboy. Originally from Arkan- sas, Smith, 48, said he grew up watching Western films and John Wayne. "I've been in love with the West all my life, but unfor- tunately my dad was always stationed somewhere back east in the humidity," Smith said with a laugh Thursday evening. "So, it was a real relief to come out West. It feels like coming home." Smith's painting, "Morn- ing Gather," depicts ranch- ers on horseback gather- ing cattle during a morn- ing sunrise. The setting: A pasture not far from Smith's Cottonwood home. Smith's piece was featured among an arrangement of paintings, drawings, sculp- tures, photographs, leather work and silver work at the fifth annual art show held during the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale that con- cludesSaturday.Theartwork celebrates Western and Na- tive American traditions and lifestyles. Jane Daugherty, the art show's manager, said the show has "exploded" in terms of quality over the last five years. Highly regarded artists have submitted work from New York, West Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma and Wy- oming, Daugherty said, as well as from Nevada, Ore- gon and California. Becky Luke, who traveled to the Bull and Gelding Sale from Roscoe, Montana, said she enjoyed the high quality pieces and authentic cowboy art featured at the show. Spe- cifically, she said, the hand- braided rawhide reins. "It represents history," said Luke, who has traveled to the Bull and Gelding Sale for the last five years.
