Since then, she also started a thrift shop to support the clinic. She's had plenty of help, and by now has a steady team of volunteers and professionals who contrib- ute to Shalom Free Clinic's success. Recently she was in- formed she is a recipient of an "eChievement Award" from an NPR program, eTown (see sidebar). Athirstyvisitor Morgans-Ferguson said there was one particular incident that led her to start the clinic. When a thirsty homeless woman came to the office door of Chico Congrega- tional Church several years ago, she gave her a glass of water. "She was pushing a shop- ping cart. She was pretty dirty and smelly. I remem- ber I told her to keep the glass. When she left, I thought, I just missed an angel and if she ever comes back, I will treat her bet- ter." The woman did return. Morgans-Ferguson said she helped the woman and her husband, who both had numerous disabilities, as much as she could. The experience left Ferguson wanting to do something tangible for people like them. Morgans-Ferguson said people who are discon- nected, isolated and lonely are not unusual. The prob- lem is not just a lack of em- ployment. "We know that 40 per- cent of the poor have men- tal health issues ... Many are really alone. Can you imagine if nobody ever says, 'how are you doing?' If nobody cared?" She talked to the pas- tor at Congregational Church, where she has been a member all her life, about the experience and told him she wanted to do something. He suggested she could try and start a clinic herself. "That was in 2005. I had my church and other people helping me ... We opened in Feb- ruary 2007." The clinic serves un- der-insured or uninsured people, and acupunctur- ists, massage therapists, nutritionists, community and congregation mem- bers and Chico State Uni- versity students all con- tribute. Volunteer servants Its description is "an all- volunteer, nonprofit medi- cal, mental health and so- cial services clinic treating the mind, body and spirit of children, teens and adults in the north state." The first Shalom clinic was in the nursery school at Congregational Church. "In June 2014, Enloe (Med- ical Center) gave us a small building on Mangrove Av- enue. We do only primary care. Originally, I thought we would be serving mostly the homeless. But who we see the most is the working poor. Even if you have a job — people who work for En- loe, Chico State — unless you work full time, there are no benefits." The clinic is open only on Sunday afternoons.
