Ontheair By Doug Ferguson The Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. Rain wasn't the only thing that put a damper on the Phoe- nix Open on Friday. The rowdiest event on the PGA Tour goes into Super Bowl weekend with- out Tiger Woods, who had the worst score of his ca- reer and missed the cut by 12 shots. Also gone is Phil Mickelson, who had his worst round on the TPC Scottsdale in six years. Martin Laird carried on nicely without them. Once the rain stopped, Laird played his best golf and he doesn't think that was a coincidence. He ran off four birdies in a five- hole stretch until making his first bogey of the tour- nament on his final hole for a second straight 5-un- der 66. That gave him a two-shot lead over Daniel Berger (69), with Justin Thomas (68) another shot behind. Both 21-year-old rookies received sponsor's exemptions. A trio of Masters champions — Bubba Watson (71), Zach Johnson (70) and Angel Ca- brera (69) were in the group four shots behind. That's not who the crowd came to see. Woods was playing the Waste Management Phoe- nix Open for the first time in 14 years. "Wel- come back!" the gallery shouted to him on Thurs- day. "Thanks for coming!" was the refrain on Friday as he walked off his final green with an 11-over 82. It was his highest score in 322 official tournaments in his career. "We all have days like this," Woods said after a day unlike any other he has had in his career. Mickelson had a 76, his highest score in this event since he opened with a 76 in 2009 and missed the cut. Neither are going to the Su- per Bowl. Mickelson flew home to San Diego, Woods to Florida, and both will meet up next week in Tor- rey Pines. It was the first time since The Greenbrier Clas- sic in 2012 that they missed the cut in the same event. PGA TOUR Laird leads at Phoenix Open Woods shoots 82 for worst career round, misses cut as well By Kareem Copeland The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY Gordon Hayward scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds as the Utah Jazz upset the league's highest-scor- ing team, the Golden State Warriors, 110-100 on Fri- day night. It was the Jazz's first win in three tries against the Warriors. Hayward showed no lingering effects from si- nus congestion that held him out of practice Thurs- day. He added six assists to his double-double. The Jazz got a huge lift from the bench with 17 points from Trevor Booker and 15 from Trey Burke. "It was good to see (Hayward) get energized and get some of his juice back," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "I think he's always risen to a challenge in a matchup. He played re- ally well and played really hard. ... The biggest thing is his rebounding." Stephen Curry had his ninth 30-point game of the season and finished with 32. His fellow All-Star backcourt teammate Klay Thompson was held to 12 after scoring at least 22 in the last five games. The Warriors were never able to put together one of their trademark scoring runs. The Jazz (17-30) used an 11-2 run early in the second quarter to take a 39-27 lead as the Warriors just didn't resemble the team with the NBA's best record. Golden State (36-8) never led, tied just twice in the first quar- ter and shot 43.0 percent from the field. Curry was the lone bright spot out- side of 15 points from Le- andro Barbosa, 13 of which were scored in the fourth quarter. Tip-Ins Warriors: The Warriors trailed by double-digits at halftime for the fifth time this season — all on the road. They are 1-4 in those games ... Outside of Curry and Thompson, Golden State starters scored just 15 points. NBA Jazz upset Warriors with Hayward leading scorer Golden State falls to Utah, first time in three meetings bers and efficiency rat- ings ranked higher. It also didn't hurt that New Or- leans hosted the event. Portland already had an All-Star this time in for- ward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was picked by the coaches as a reserve. Sac- ramento would've had no representation at All- Star weekend if Cousins hadn't been selected. That may have helped his cam- paign over Lillard, who made the All-Star team last season. "Everyone in the Kings organization is thrilled for DeMarcus and happy that his diligence and commit- ment to becoming the best player he can be has been recognized," Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro said. Cousins entered Friday night's contest at Cleveland fifth in the NBA in scor- ing (23.8 points) and third in rebounding (12.3) per game, both career highs. He also was averaging ca- reer-bests of 3.2 assists and 1.6 blocks. The biggest thing hurt- ing Cousins' cause — be- sides the competition — was his team's worsening record. After starting 9-5 this season, the Kings (16-28) have collapsed since Cous- ins came down with viral meningitis in late Novem- ber. They went 2-8 dur- ing his sick leave — which coincided with Michael Malone's stunning firing as coach — and have failed to pick up the pieces under short-term replacement Ty- rone Corbin. Lillard began Friday av- eraging 21.8 points, 6.2 as- sists and 4.6 rebounds. The Northwest Division-lead- ing Blazers (32-14) were tied for the third-best re- cord in the difficult West- ern Conference. Cousins FROM PAGE 1 84 in Sacramento on Jan. 11. The Kings haven't won since and have the longest current losing streak in the NBA while the Cavaliers are one of the league's hot- test teams. Cleveland won eight straight from Nov. 24-Dec. 9. The nine-game streak is its longest since it won 13 in a row in 2010. Love, who was 9 of 17 from the field and had 10 rebounds, will return to Minnesota on Satur- day night for the first time since the Cavaliers acquired him from the Timberwolves last sum- mer. Cousins was named an All-Star replacement for Kobe Bryant, who is out for the season. Rudy Gay added 20 points for the Kings. Tip-Ins Kings: Cousins and Cav- aliers G J.R. Smith were given double technicals in the second quarter. ... F Jason Thompson was also hit with a technical in the third. ... Sacramento's last road win was at Minnesota on Jan. 1. Cavaliers: Love had a team trainer do some quick work on his back be- fore the lineups were intro- duced. Kings FROM PAGE 1 Scoreboard Football SUPERBOWL Sunday,Feb.1 At Glendale, Ariz.
