Ontheair By Cam Inman BayAreaNewsGroup SANTA CLARA No, the San Francisco 49ers aren't promising to run for 351 yards against the New York Giants, which would be one yard better than the rival Seattle Seahawks' massive total in last Sunday's 38-17 rout of the Giants. "I'm pretty sure that won't happen again," 49ers rookie running back Car- los Hyde said Thursday. "It's not often you see stuff happen twice in the NFL." Then again, it is a copy- cat league, so the 49ers (5- 4) might want to stick with their reincarnated rushing attack Sunday when they visit the Giants (3-6). New York has the league's worst rushing defense, allowing 144.7 yards per game. The 49ers saw Hyde and Frank Gore run for first- quarter touchdowns in their 27-24 overtime win Sunday at New Orleans. By game's end, the 49ers had totaled 144 rushing yards, their most in four games. "It was good to get the offensive line going and get the running game going," Frank Gore said. Gore's 81 yards Sunday raised his team-leading to- tal to 553 this season. He remains on pace for 983 yards, which would be his first season under 1,000 yards since his injury- shortened 2010 year. Gore wasn't acting over- confident this week despite the prospect of facing a generous Giants defense. "I feel if I play as I should al- ways play, I'll have a great opportunity," Gore said. The Giants have allowed running backs to run wild three of the past four games. Marshawn Lynch's 140-yard, four-touchdown dominance Sunday fol- lowed those of the Dallas Cowboys' DeMarco Murray (128 yards, one TD; Oct. 19) and the Houston Texans' Arian Foster (151 yards, two TDs; Oct. 26). "I'm sure the New York Football Giants are going to be back there evaluating what they did, and try to get it the way they want it," 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. A run-first mental- ity would be embraced by wide receiver Anquan Boldin. "What we want to do is be balanced," Boldin said. "First of all, we want to establish the run, and, we feel if we do that, every- thing builds off that." Giants coach Tom Coughlin noted on a con- ference call that the 49ers have a top-10 rushing at- tack (ninth; 122.2 yards per game) and a "solid, two- prong attack" with Gore and Hyde. There's also Colin Kae- pernick, of course, who is looking for his first touch- down run of the season. Se- ahawks' counterpart Rus- sell Wilson ran for 107 yards and a touchdown, as the Seahawks outscored the Giants 21-0 in the fourth quarter. "The Seahawks got lucky on some stuff offensively," said Hyde, who hopes to moonlight as the 49ers' kickoff returner again in place of an injured Bruce Ellington. • Linebacker NaVorro Bowman's comeback has cleared a hurdle after a recent MRI revealed no structural damage to his left knee. Bowman is on the reserve/physically-un- able-to-perform list, and he must start practicing Tues- day to open a three-week evaluation window if he's to play this season. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said he was un- aware of Bowman's MRI re- sults and said it remained a possibility he does not play this season. • Giants quarterback Eli Manning likely will face a 49ers secondary that in- cludes rookie Dontae Johnson as the No. 3 cor- nerback. Cornerback Tra- maine Brock (hamstring) and nickel back Jimmie Ward (foot) did not prac- tice for a second straight day and are expected to sit Sunday. Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver remain entrenched as the starting corner- backs, but Cox likely will shift inside to cover the slot receiver when John- son is summoned on pass- ing downs. NFL 49ers look to run on Giants New York defense gashed by several running backs was happy that her team took the overall champi- onship. "It's definitely a great ti- tle to hold. Chico High is infamous for placing well and scoring well," Wilson said. She wasn't the only one. Ayars was two spots be- hind Wilson for a 20:16.04 finish. "She ran out of her head," Chico coach Kevin Girt said of the sophomore. Jolliff took 18th in 20:48.69, and Geor- gina Quinn was 20th in 20:53.03. Crescetelli was 36th in 21:39.23. "We're a really close team, and some of the people who pretty much hold this team together are graduating this year so it'll be nice to have that last cross country race with them," Wilson said. Enterprise sophomore Natalie Ulloa defended the individual title she won as a freshman, this time win- ning in 18:54.51. Ulloa was one of the many individual runners who qualified for state. Par- adise junior Talia Swan- gler finished in 20:18.14 and 13th overall. Durham sophomore Ellie Coffee's time of 20:36.09 was also good enough to get her to Fresno as she finished 16th overall. Pleasant Valley's Ni- cole Dully placed 19th in 20:50.4. State-bound Las Plu- mas was led by sopho- more Alysa Merrifield, who finished 38th overall in 21:40.22, and freshman teammate Kaitlin Morgado was 40th in 21:43.56. The boys' race belonged to Trinity's Ben Harper, who won in 15:55.80, and Yreka, the defending state champion for Division IV. The Miners not only kept their section D-IV crown but took the overall title Thursday with 52 points. Shasta was second with 87, and West Valley was third in 107. Corning was fifth with 157. Chico took sixth in 168, and Pleasant Valley was seventh with 285. Las Plumas placed eighth with 296, and Para- dise was ninth in 297. The top individual from the area was Paradise's Masen Becerril, who took seventh overall in 16:33.47. Chico's Jacob Graber was 11th in 16:52.91, and Pleasant Valley's Tony Hub- bell took 12th in 16:53.80. Liam Monniger, also of Chico, was 15th in 17:03.51. All of them are headed to state as is Hamilton's Henry Cowan-Larkin, who was 18th overall in 17:06.02. Two freshmen are go- ing as well. Corning's Ce- sar Rios finished in 17:14.05 for 27th, and Las Plumas' Brian Hastings placed 28th in 17:14.69. Graber was one of the race favorites, and he will be headed back to state af- ter finishing as the top in- dividual qualifier for D-III. "I expected to have a better race than I did to- day. However it happens, I had a really good season," said Graber, who won all three of his league races this year. Pleasant Valley's Shayne Morrissey placed 23rd in 17:11.07. The boys teams headed to state are Shasta (Di- vision III), Yreka (D-IV), West Valley (D-IV) and University Prep (D-V), and the other girls teams going to Fresno are Yreka (D-IV), West Valley (D-IV) and Mo- doc (D-V). The Durham girls fin- ished three points behind Modoc at 233-236, but only one D-V team advances. Runners FROM PAGE 1 Memphis' first of the night — with 10.7 seconds left.
