ByClayBailey TheAssociatedPress MEMPHIS, TENN. Courtney Lee scored on a lob pass as time expired to cap a furi- ous fourth-quarter rally, and the Memphis Grizzlies came from 26 points down to beat the Sacramento Kings 111-110 on Thursday night. The outcome wasn't decided until after a lengthy review by officials who were trying to de- termine if the inbounds pass from Vince Carter with less than a second left was tipped by the Kings, and also to deter- mine if Lee got the shot off be- fore the horn sounded. Mike Conley led Mem- phis with 22 points and 11 as- sists, while Marc Gasol had 20 points. Lee's reverse layup gave him 16 points on 6-of-9 shoot- ing. Rudy Gay scored 25 points, while DeMarcus Cousins added 22 points and 12 re- bounds for the Kings, who lost their third straight. Sacramento held a 110-109 lead, but Ben McLemore, who finished with 17 points, missed a pair of free throws and Mem- phis grabbed the rebound with 0.3 seconds remaining. Carter inbounded the ball for the Grizzlies. Gasol set a pick up top of the key, but Gay and Jason Thompson failed to switch on defense, freeing Lee for the final shot. The victory extended Mem- phis' regular-season home winning streak to 18. But that seemed in doubt through most of the game. Sacramento, which led by 26 in the first half, still main- tained a 17-point advantge with just over 7 minutes left. Memphis clicked off seven un- answered points to get within 103-93. That was part of a 16-1 run that included a pair of 3-pointers from Carter from the opposite corners to cut the deficit to 104-102. Their depth prevailed as they not only won the Division III ti- tle but the overall one as well at the Northern Section CIF Cross Country Championships. Chico's Celeste Wilson placed 10th overall, and teammates Jes- salyn Ayars, Annie Jolliff and Georgina Quinn finished soon af- ter in the first final Thursday at West Valley High. Jolliff was caught off-guard by the team's title even though she wasn't surprised by how the Pan- thers ran, finishing so close to- gether as she drew a clear dis- tinction between the two. "It didn't feel like we did that well. We did obviously because we won. First overall, that's re- ally amazing," Jolliff said. "We're all important because that's just not how cross country works. You can't win with just one person. I feel like we're all pretty good." The Panthers are better than that. On Thursday, they were the best once Michaela Crescetelli completed Chico's top five, pro- viding the Panthers a total of 76 points to beat Yreka's 89 and Shasta's 104. As the D-III champion, Chico qualified for the state meet on Nov. 29 at Fresno. Mike Trout was a unanimous pick for the AL honor after fin- ishing second the previous two years. The 23-year-old became the fifth-youngest MVP in major league history and the youngest unanimous selection. Kershaw, the Los Angeles Dodgers ace, breezed past Mi- ami slugger Giancarlo Stanton and Pittsburgh outfielder Andrew McCutchen for the NL award. Bob Gibson in 1968 was the previous pitcher to be the NL MVP. Detroit pitcher Justin Ver- lander won the AL MVP in 2011. "To have people think you mean that much to your team, it really is a huge honor," Kershaw said on the MLB Network telecast. There was plenty of everyday player-vs.-pitcher MVP debate leading up to this announcement. Soon after Kershaw unanimously won the NL Cy Young Award on Wednesday, he acknowledged "there are so many people out there who don't think a pitcher should win."
