Here's one: "A couple of weeks ago, I received a check in the mail for $10.87, with a letter saying it was my share of a settlement from a class-action suit against LifeLock. I feel leery about cashing it. Yes, I was a LifeLock customer during that time period (based on your recommenda- tion -- and by the way, their service did eliminate credit card invitations like a charm!), but this letter gave me that same intuitive 'nuh-uh' that I get from a link in an e-mail that ultimately turns out to have been a virus. I happened to spot a LifeLock link on your website, and I thought, 'If anyone knows if this is legit, it would be Mary Hunt.' So here I am. Do you know anything about this? Thanks much. -- Veronica" And another: "We subscribed to LifeLock after reading your column. We received a small check from an FTC settlement that found LifeLock did not provide the level of safety they advertised. Do you still recommend them? If not, then who? Thank you very much. -- Marcia" I am aware that the Federal Trade Commission had issues with LifeLock and found it to be guilty of misleading Police reports The following infor- mation is compiled from Red Bluff Police Depart- ment, Tehama County Sheriff’s Department, Corning Police Depart- ment and California Highway Patrol. Arrests • Luciano Ayala-Mar- tinez, 25, and Hector Manuel Rubio, 20, both of Modesto were arrested Thursday on northbound Interstate 5, south of Rice Creek. Both men were booked into Tehama County Jail on the charges of using false cit- izenship documents, forging official seal and possession of deceptive government identifica- tion. Ayala-Martinez was booked on the additional charges of using a false compartment and driving without a license. Bail was set at $42,500 for Ayala-Martinez and $30,000 for Rubio. • Thomas Jerome Arnold, 47, of Paynes Creek was arrested Thursday at the Tehama County Sheriff’s Depart- ment. Arnold, also known as Thomas Jerome Rosco and Thomas Jerome Arnoco, was booked into jail on the charge of transporting or selling a controlled substance. No bail was set. • Nicole Lynn Baugh- er, 24, of Red Bluff was arrested Friday in the 200 block of White Road. She was booked into jail on the charge of inflict- ing corporal injury on spouse or cohabitant. Bail was set at $25,000. • Rebecca Diane Bochantin, 39, of Corn- ing was arrested Thurs- day in the 600 block of Edith Avenue in Corning. Bochantin, also known as Becky Nolan and Rebec- ca Diane Morgan, was booked into Tehama County Jail on the charges of trespassing and burglary. Bail was set at $102,500. advertising. My interpretation is that LifeLock overstated its ability to be able to prevent all forms of iden- tity theft. I think that would be like saying that a lock on your home could prevent all burglaries. It's an overstatement, if not a terrible exaggeration. Theoretically, if someone wants to get in, he'll find a way. The prudent home- owner gets the best lock available and then has backup plans in the form of insurance if thieves break in. That's how I look at LifeLock. For me and my family, it's insurance. I know that LifeLock is doing all it can to protect my identity, but if some- thing were to happen and I got whacked, LifeLock would act to restore my identity, paying up to $1 million to accomplish whatever needs to be done. In determining that LifeLock was guilty, the FTC required the company to pay back $12 million to customers who may have been harmed in believ- ing the advertising. In the world of business, it got the equivalent of a speeding ticket. It broke the rules. • Franco Cornejo-Vil- lalobos, 28, and Jamie Espinosa Lucatero, 26, both of San Jose were arrested Friday on north- bound I-5, south of Sour- grass Road. Both were booked on the charges of possession of a con- trolled substance for sale and transport or selling a controlled substance. Bail was $50,000 each. • Dennis Ray Dixon II, 30, of Cottonwood was arrested Saturday in the 19200 block of Sebastian Court in Cot- tonwood. He was booked into jail on the charges of inflicting corporal injury on spouse or cohabitant and false imprisonment. Bail was set at $110,000. According to Sheriff’s logs, the reporting party requested a welfare check on youths, saying someone had been ver- bally abusive over the past two days. Child Pro- tective Services was called in and the youths were released to CPS’ custody. • Edward Graham, 47, of Red Bluff was arrested Friday in the area of Wal- nut and Franklin streets. He was booked into jail on the charges of posses- sion of and transporting or selling a controlled substance. bail was set at $35,000. •Webb Earl Petty, 55, of Corning was arrested Sunday in the 4200 block of Oren Avenue. He was booked into jail on the charge of inflicting cor- poral injury on spouse or cohabitant. Bail was $25,000. • Michael Johnathan Vanberckelar, also Mary Hunt Everyday Cheapskate LifeLock is not the first company brought up on charges with the FTC. Recently, Verizon was found guilty by the FTC for similar misdeeds. It was required to return $25 million to its customers to settle the issue. Intel spent years fighting antitrust challenges, agreeing to pay back $1.25 billion in the FTC settlement. I could go on and on, naming many large companies that have been caught by the FTC for violating commerce laws. All that to say, I am not concerned about LifeLock. It took its punishment and changed its advertising prac- tices. I remain a very satisfied customer. As such, I recom- mend the service to you and have arranged with the com- pany for you to receive the biggest discount available. Just use the promo code "DPL." Box 2135, Paramount, CA 90723. known as Michael Johnathan Berckelar, 36, of Los Molinos was arrested Sunday at a resi- dence on Highway 99E in Los Molinos. Physical evidence from a recent burglary led deputies to Vanberckelar’s residence where a consent search turned up ammunition. Vanberckelar is a con- victed felon. He was booked into jail on the charge of felon in posses- sion of ammunition. Bail was $10,000. Fire • An electrical-caused attic fire reported at 11:51 a.m. Monday did $100,000 damage with a $300,000 save to a resi- dence on the corner of Sherwood Boulevard and South Center Street in Los Molinos. No one was injured. The fire was con- tained at 12:39 p.m. and CalFire cleared at 4:15 p.m. Hit and runs • Three hit and runs took place between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The first was at 11:55 p.m. Friday on Samson Avenue at Santa Maria Avenue in unin- corporated Corning. A 2003 Chrysler Sebring with major front end damage was left at the scene. The vehicle had been going east on Santa Maria when it hit a fence. A second hit and run took place at 4:30 a.m. Saturday on Samson Avenue, west of Barham Avenue, when a 2000 Infinity Quatro going east on Samson Avenue ran off the road and hit a mailbox, wire fence, an olive tree and a power pole, causing major dam- age to the vehicle. A hit and run took place at 5:30 p.m. Satur- day on Highway 99E, north of Aramayo Way. A GMC pickup was going south on 99E at an unknown speed when it veered off the west side and hit a fence, damaging 25 feet of field fence. The driver fled the scene south on 99E. Damage to the pickup is unknown. Theft •Tehama County Sheriff’s Deputies locat- ed a vehicle about 2 a.m. Sunday that had been burglarized while parked on the shoulder of Hall Road near South Avenue. The vehicle’s stereo had been removed from the dash and items were strewn about the vehicles interior. The owner, Jacy Snyder, was contacted at her residence and informed her vehicle had been burglarized. Dam- age, which includes two broken windows, the stolen stereo a stolen wallet and $50 cash stolen, is estimated at $850.
