Central Tehama wins in thriller By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor The Central Tehama major softball team opened the District 1 All-Stars tournament with a stunning, late-game comeback. Central Tehama downed Foothill 10-9 on Wednesday at Jackson Heights Elementary School in a marathon of a game that lasted nearly three hours. Down 9-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Central Tehama fought its way back into the game as runs scored by Sayla Vasquez and Rachel Rogers cut their team's deficit to 9-7. With two outs recorded against it, Central Tehama's Katilynn Ables stepped up to the plate and staged a remarkable at-bat that had Foothill one strike away from winning the opening round game. Instead, Ables knocked a game-tying shot to center that scored Hayden Ellenberger and Tyler Ellenberger. After taking second base easily, Ables attempted to steal third, which forced a wild throw from Foothill in an attempt to catch her. With the ball dribbling into the outfield, Ables darted home, slid and narrowly beat out a throw to the plate, winning the game for Central Tehama. Central Tehama next faces Corning or Red Bluff today at 6 p.m. at Jackson Heights. GOLF NBA Kings enter draft with little preparation Sharks re-sign Desjardins, Sheppard SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks have re-signed forwards Andrew Desjardins and James Sheppard before they could become restricted free agents next month. General manager Doug Wilson announced the deals on Wednesday to lock up the players before the free agency period starts July 5. Desjardins had two goals and one assist in 42 games last season playing mostly on the fourth line. He won 54.2 percent of his faceoffs and got significant time on a much-improved penalty kill unit. Sheppard had one goal and three assists in 32 games last season in his return from a career-threatening leg injury from an ATV accident that kept him out of the NHL for two seasons. Smartan on Monday plucked a few blades of grass at Hole 4 at Sevillano Links and tossed them in the air. The 11-year-old discovered a strong wind blowing from right to left, took his 6iron and drove a shot into the wind, watching the ball fly past the rough and onto the green. Then nothing. "I didn't see it anywhere," he said, then thought, "Oh, that's a holein-one." Smartan, of Red Bluff was playing the Challenge tees at the course, which three years ago sparked his interest in golf. On a father-son trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Smartan said he told his dad, Pete, to pull over as they passed upscale homes on the drive. "Oh, well this is a nice course," Smartan recalled saying, adding, "If I make the pros, just imagine how I'd live in those mansions." The hole is a 169-yard par 3. Smartan is entering Vista Middle School as a seventh grader, and already has earned a black belt in JiuJitsu. While golf is his No. 1 sport, he also is an avid basketball player and fan. At Bidwell Elementary school, he said, his team went undefeated last season. He said he wants to thank his golf swing coach, Ron Kawata, and trainers Kyle Tingley and Troy Lalaguna at Tehama Family Fitness Center. Smartan will next compete at the Sevillano Links Junior Tournament on saturday. Smartan said he's had seven near holes-in-one. Now, he says, "I want to make another one." ——— Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 5272151, ext. 111 or at spor ts@redbluffdailynews.com. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — From owner to general manager to coach, no other NBA management team has had as little time to prepare for the draft this year as the Sacramento Kings. The Kings have had so much turmoil and turnover since the season ended that focusing on the future has been an ever-present process of acceleration. The uncertainty that clouded the franchise for so long hit its peak May 21, when Keith Smart represented the Kings at the draft lottery at the request of the Maloof family. Smart has since been fired as coach and replaced by Mike Malone. Pete D'Alessandro took over as general manager for Geoff Petrie last week. And new owner Vivek Ranadive has wiped away just about every memory of the Maloofs inside Sacramento's suburban arena as part of the franchise's ''new era.'' The Kings can begin adding to that next chapter on the court come Thursday night, when they have the seventh and 36th overall picks in the draft. ''I see real potential in this draft,'' D'Alessandro said. The first-time general manager has relied heavily on the scouting he did in Denver's front office and leaned heavily on Malone — whom D'Alessandro jokingly called ''a seasoned veteran with two weeks' experience'' at his introductory news conference — to decide how that information might translate to the coach's style and Sacramento's needs. D'Alessandro also brought over Mike Bratz from the Nuggets to be his assistant general manager. As for filling out the rest of his front office, that will have to wait. ''The beauty of this business is you have a network,'' D'Alessandro said. ''It's like any business — you have people that you trust. Even without having a staff, I have the people that I trust in this industry that are excellent.'' This year's draft will shed some insight on what direction D'Alessandro and Malone want to take the team. The Kings could go for a point guard to complement big man DeMarcus Cousins.
