Altacal Audubon Society to visit Lassen National Park The Altacal Audubon Society has a July 26-28 trip planned to Lassen Volcanic National Park. This will be a great weekend to bird and socialize with neighboring Audubon chapters. The group has reserved a site at Lost Creek Group Campground. Wintu Audubon and possibly another chapter will have their Lassen trip on the same weekend and will explore various parts of the park each day. Visitors can join for one or more of the hikes, kayak or canoe on their own at Manzanita Lake, explore the park or lounge in camp. The birding is great right in the campground area. The groups will get together for dinner and campfire socializing in the evenings and perhaps take a night hike to look for owls. There is a $10 fee per car to enter the park and participants will share the campsite fee. Group size is limited. Call Mary Muchowski at 530-228-0625 or send an email to mmuchowski@earthlink.net. Setting it straight The Four R's of gardening By COLETTE BAUER It's early summer and time to take a careful look at your garden with the 4 R's in mind: revitalize, reinvigor, reinvent and reestablish. Revitalize - Yes, it's the time of year when plants are either in bloom or have finished blooming for the year. Either way dead heading is important to the continued beauty of your yard. Dead heading is removing the spent flowers from your plants which encourages the plant to continue to produce more blooms. Apparently a plant's purpose is to reproduce. Therefore if the plant isn't developing seeds it continues to bloom. Roses are a perfect example. By dead heading my roses every few days I have beautiful roses from April until the first frost, usually in November. I am also keeping busy with marigolds, petunias, blackeyed Susans, and zinnias. Trees and bushes also need attention. I have removed the dry blooms from my lilac and red bud trees and after the smoke trees bloom I will also remove their blossoms. Then there are the bushes. For years I have dutifully removed the spent flowers from my spiaria bushes. My friend, Cathy laughed when I commented what a pain (literally) in the back this job is. She laughed because her solution to the problem was to buy a pair if electric hedge clippers and cut back the bushes in a matter of minutes. I now own a pair of electric hedge clippers! Reinvigor - Now is a good time to give your plants a shot of fertilizer. It is recommended that most plants be given a "shot" of fertilizer about once a month. My Dad always said that the best fertilizer you can give your plants is your foot steps. Not a bad way to look at tending your yard. If you look around, your plants often tell you what they need. Last year while we were on vacation my euphorbia became infected with soft scale. By the time I noticed, it was too late to save the plant. I needed to heed my Dad's advice and am doing a much better job of applying his brand of fertilizer to my plants. Reinvent - Again, your foot steps will help in the reinventing process. Watch your plants and check for too much or too little water. Last year we were over watering our tomatoes and had beautiful vines but little in the way of fruit. This year we have cut way back on the amount of water we are using and the plants bear lots of tomatoes. Another thing to watch for is the effects of sun or shade on your plants. Roses do well in the sun but will become "leggy" if they are in the shade. Over the years, as my Purple Plum trees have grown, and have begun to cut into the amount of sun some of my roses receive each day. This is not a good thing. I have not yet moved my roses but it is on my "to do" list. Too much shade can also cause problems. My Hydrangeas, which I planted under the Redwood trees have yet to bloom this year. A few days ago I cut back some of the branches surrounding the Hydrangeas and am hoping to see results in the near future. Keep an eye on your plants and they will let you know when they are unhappy and you can make adjustments. Reestablish - Yes you must reestablish control over your domain. Put simply, you have to deal with the weeds and invasive plants. We had fond hopes of having a "carefree" yard. I am convinced that that only happens when you pave it over and paint it green. We used weed guard and bark in some beds and even rock in the rose bed. It doesn't matter. The spurge, clover, and Bermuda grass are all doing very well. The good news is that this creates a job for the grandchildren when they run short on money. By revitalizing, reinvigorating, reinventing, and reestablishing, you can have the yard you dream of. It is not easy and change is continual but for many of us it is well worth the time and effort. Many Admire Moon Vine In Front Of Jail That tourists passing through Red Bluff are admiring the beautiful Brazilian moon vine that covers part of the front of the county jail, is evident from the numerous inquiries coming from far and wide as to what it is and where plantings of it can be obtained. The vine was planted by William Stevenson, veteran jailer of the county jail, who has been nursing it along and training it across the front entrance until now the vine presents luxuriant growth. — June 27, 1923 wellness information for which TOPS is wellknown.
