Thursday, June 27, 2013 – Daily News 5A WORLD BRIEFING Pro football player Aaron Hernandez charged with murder ATTLEBORO, Mass. (AP) — New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in the shooting death of a friend prosecutors say had angered the football player at a nightclub a few days earlier by talking to the wrong people. Hernandez, 23, was taken from his North Attleborough home in handcuffs just over a week after Boston semipro football player Odin Lloyd's bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park about a mile away. Less than two hours after the arrest, the Patriots announced they had cut Hernandez, a 2011 Pro Bowl selection who signed a five-year contract worth $40 million last summer. Lloyd was a 27-yearold athlete with the Boston Bandits who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. He was shot repeatedly in the back and chest, authorities said. Hernandez ''orchestrated the crime from the beginning,'' prosecutor Bill McCauley said. Immigration bill cruising toward Senate passage WASHINGTON (AP) — Far-reaching immigration legislation cruised toward passage in the Senate as House Republicans pushed ahead Wednesday on a different approach that cracks down on millions living in the United States illegally rather than offering them a chance at citizenship. Presidential politics took a more prominent role in a long-running national debate as Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., tried to reassure conservatives that many of the criticisms of the bill, which he helped write, are ''just not true.'' The potential 2016 White House contender said in remarks on the Senate floor it has been difficult for him ''to hear the worry and the anxiety and the growing anger in the voices of so many people who helped me get elected to the Senate and who I agree with on virtually every other issue.'' The political impact of the issue aside, there was no doubt that the Senate bill was on track for passage by Thursday or Friday. Supporters posted 67 votes or more on each of three procedural tests Wednesday, far more than the 60 needed to prevail. More than a dozen Republicans sided with Democrats on each, assuring bipartisan support that the bill's backers hope will change minds in the House. Mystery of Snowden's whereabouts deepens MOSCOW (AP) — Moscow's main airport Texas woman's lethal injection set swarmed with journalists from around the globe Wednesday, but the man they were looking for, National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, was nowhere to be seen. The mystery of his whereabouts only deepened a day after President Vladimir Putin said that Snowden was in the transit area of Sheremetyevo Airport. There were ordinary scenes of duty free shopping, snoozing travelers and tourists sipping coffee but no trace of America's most famous fugitive. If Putin's statement is true, it means that Snowden has effectively lived a life of airport limbo since his weekend flight from Hong Kong, especially with his American passport now revoked by U.S. authorities. Adding to the uncertainty, Ecuador's foreign minister said it could take up to two months to decide whether to grant asylum to Snowden and the Latin American nation would take into consideration its relations with the U.S. Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino compared Snowden's case to that of Julian Assange, the founder of anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, who has been given asylum in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London. ''It took us two months to make a decision in the case of Assange, so do not expect us to make a decision sooner this time,'' Patino told reporters during a visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. However, later in the day he said on Twitter that the decision could happen ''in a day, a week, or, as happened with Assange, it could take two months.'' S. African president cancels trip amid concern over critically ill Mandela JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa's president visited a gravely ill Nelson Mandela in the hospital on Wednesday night, and canceled a visit planned for the next day to Mozambique, an indication of heightened concern over the deteriorating health of the man widely considered the father of the country. President Jacob Zuma found 94-year-old Mandela to still be in critical condition during the 10 p.m. visit and was briefed by doctors ''who are still doing everything they can to ensure his well-being,'' Zuma's office said in a statement. It said the president decided to cancel a visit to Maputo, the Mozambican capital, on Thursday, where he was to attend a meeting on regional investment. As worries over Mandela mounted, Mac Maharaj, the presidential spokesman, declined to comment on media reports that the former president and antiapartheid leader was on life support systems in the Pretoria hospital where he was taken June 8 to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection. ''I cannot comment on the clinical details of these reports because that would breach the confidentiality of the doctor/patient relationship,'' Maharaj said in an interview with South Africa's Radio 702. HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas, the nation's busiest death penalty state, is set to mark a solemn moment in criminal justice Wednesday with the execution of convicted killer Kimberly McCarthy. If McCarthy is put to death in Huntsville as planned, she would become the 500th person executed in Texas since the state resumed carrying out the death penalty in 1982. The 52-year-old also would be the first woman executed in the U.S. since 2010. McCarthy's attorney, Maurie Levin, said she has exhausted all efforts to block the execution, after denials by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. ''If there was something to appeal, I would,'' said Levin. Texas has carried out nearly 40 percent of the more than 1,300 executions in the U.S. since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976. The state's standing stems from its size as the nation's second most populous state as well as its tradition of tough justice for killers. Human Gov. Perry throwing calls 2nd ability special appeared 2M session of the years ago NEW YORK (AP) — Texas It's a big year for throwing. The greatest closer in Legislature baseball history, Mariano AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday called a second special session of the Texas Legislature to pass widespread abortion restrictions, after the first attempt by Republicans died overnight following a marathon one-woman filibuster. Perry ordered lawmakers to meet again on July 1 to act on the abortion proposals, as well as separate bills that would boost highway funding and deal with a juvenile justice issue. The sweeping abortion rules would close nearly all abortion clinics and impose other widespread restrictions on the procedure across the nation's secondlargest state. The measure passed the House, but died after Democratic Sen. Wendy Davis led a more than 12-hour filibuster effort. Hundreds of protesters then cheered, disrupting Senate proceedings as the session closed at midnight. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst hinted that another special session was coming when he denounced the protesters as an ''unruly mob.'' Democrats who urged them on called the outburst democracy in action. In either point of view, a raucous crowd of chanting, singing, shouting demonstrators effectively took over the Texas Capitol. The final outcome took several hours to sort out. Rivera of the Yankees, is retiring. Aroldis Chapman, the overpowering Cincinnati Reds reliever, continues to fire fastballs beyond 100 mph. And now some scientists say they've figured out when our human ancestors first started throwing with accuracy and fire power, as only people can: Nearly 2 million years ago. That's what researchers conclude in a study released Wednesday by the journal Nature. There's plenty of skepticism about their conclusion. But the new paper contends that this throwing ability probably helped our ancient ancestor Homo erectus hunt, allowing him to toss weapons — probably rocks and sharpened wooden spears. The human throwing ability is unique. Not even a chimp, our closest living relative and a creature noted for strength, can throw nearly as fast as a Lic.#944446 Full Retail Store Service & Maintenance Equipment Upgrade Vinyl Liner Pools Family Hair Salon 20 % off ANY RETAIL PRODUCT 10 Damon Ave., Red Bluff 530-527-3262 • www.tuscanpools.com 226 So. Main St., Red Bluff 527-3735 NEW YORK (AP) — Paula Deen was dropped by Wal-Mart and her name was stripped from four buffet restaurants on Wednesday, hours after she went on television and tearfully defended herself amid the mounting fallout over her admission of using a racial slur. The story has become both a day-by-day struggle by a successful businesswoman to keep her career afloat and an object lesson on the level of tolerance and forgiveness in society for being caught making an insensitive remark. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Wednesday that it ended its relationship with Deen and will not place ''any new orders beyond what's already committed.'' Caesars Entertainment Corp. said it had been ''mutually decided'' with Deen to remove her name from its restaurants in Joliet, Ill.; Tunica, Miss.; Cherokee, N.C.; and Elizabeth, Ind. At the same time, Deen's representatives released letters of support from nine companies that do business with the chef and promised to continue. There's evidence that a backlash is growing against the Food Network, which tersely announced last Friday that it was cutting ties with one of its stars. Artists, activists unite at Manning trial FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — Clark Stoeckley is Bradley Manning's most visible supporter at the soldier's court-martial. He arrives each day in a white box truck with bold words painted on the sides: ''WikiLeaks TOP SECRET Mobile Information Collection Unit.'' The provocative gag even has a nonworking satellite dish and two fake security cameras on it. The loose-knit group of mostly retirees or selfemployed workers sits through hours of sometimes bland testimony at Fort Meade, a military installation near Baltimore. They take notes, make courtroom sketches or write blogs, posting their drawings and articles on websites designed to inform people about the court-martial and raise money for Manning's defense. They do so because they are united in skepticism of the U.S. government and the belief that Manning exposed wrongdoing by leaking hundreds of thousands of battlefield reports and State Department cables, as well as Iraq and Afghanistan war video. Stoeckley, who teaches at Bloomfield College, is spending his summer sketching the courtroom drama, making colorful drawings of the Army private in his dress blue uniform; witnesses in their Army fatigues and Manning supporters in their black T-shirts with the word ''truth'' across the chest. NY court: Baristas must share tips ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Starbucks baristas must share their tips with shift supervisors, but assistant managers are left out in the cold, the state's highest court ruled Wednesday. The Court of Appeals found that shift supervisors do much of the same work as the coffee servers and therefore get to share in the tips. It also ruled that the company, which is based in Seattle, can deny those tips to assistant managers. The ruling, responding to two lawsuits, backed Starbucks' policy of divvying up the tips, saying it's consistent with labor law. Hospitality industry groups say the court's decision likely will affect policies at similar restaurants and coffee houses and will affect 42,000 businesses statewide and a quartermillion hospitality industry workers in New York City alone. The New York State Restaurant Association, which represents more than 56,000 restaurants, bars and clubs, called the decision a win for all New York hospitality employers seeking clarity on how to compensate employees. ''In this business, many staff members share all kinds of responsibilities, and now we have an understanding of who can participate in the tip pool,'' association president Rick Sampson said. 741 Main Street, Suite #2 Red Bluff, CA 96080 1-800-287-2187 (530) 527-2187 C & C PROPERTIES An Independently owned and operated Member of Coldwell Banker Residential Affiliates.
