(AP) — New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in the shooting death of a friend prosecutors say had angered the football player at a nightclub a few days earlier by talking to the wrong people. Hernandez, 23, was taken from his North Attleborough home in handcuffs just over a week after Boston semipro football player Odin Lloyd's bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial park about a mile away. Less than two hours after the arrest, the Patriots announced they had cut Hernandez, a 2011 Pro Bowl selection who signed a five-year contract worth $40 million last summer. Lloyd was a 27-yearold athlete with the Boston Bandits who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. He was shot repeatedly in the back and chest, authorities said. Hernandez ''orchestrated the crime from the beginning,'' prosecutor Bill McCauley said. Immigration bill cruising toward Senate passage WASHINGTON (AP) — Far-reaching immigration legislation cruised toward passage in the Senate as House Republicans pushed ahead Wednesday on a different approach that cracks down on millions living in the United States illegally rather than offering them a chance at citizenship. Presidential politics took a more prominent role in a long-running national debate as Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., tried to reassure conservatives that many of the criticisms of the bill, which he helped write, are ''just not true.'' The potential 2016 White House contender said in remarks on the Senate floor it has been difficult for him ''to hear the worry and the anxiety and the growing anger in the voices of so many people who helped me get elected to the Senate and who I agree with on virtually every other issue.'' The political impact of the issue aside, there was no doubt that the Senate bill was on track for passage by Thursday or Friday. Supporters posted 67 votes or more on each of three procedural tests Wednesday, far more than the 60 needed to prevail. More than a dozen Republicans sided with Democrats on each, assuring bipartisan support that the bill's backers hope will change minds in the House. Adding to the uncertainty, Ecuador's foreign minister said it could take up to two months to decide whether to grant asylum to Snowden and the Latin American nation would take into consideration its relations with the U.S. Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino compared Snowden's case to that of Julian Assange, the founder of anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks, who has been given asylum in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London. African president cancels trip amid concern over critically ill Mandela JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South Africa's president visited a gravely ill Nelson Mandela in the hospital on Wednesday night, and canceled a visit planned for the next day to Mozambique, an indication of heightened concern over the deteriorating health of the man widely considered the father of the country. President Jacob Zuma found 94-year-old Mandela to still be in critical condition during the 10 p.m. visit and was briefed by doctors ''who are still doing everything they can to ensure his well-being,'' Zuma's office said in a statement. It said the president decided to cancel a visit to Maputo, the Mozambican capital, on Thursday, where he was to attend a meeting on regional investment. As worries over Mandela mounted, Mac Maharaj, the presidential spokesman, declined to comment on media reports that the former president and antiapartheid leader was on life support systems in the Pretoria hospital where he was taken June 8 to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection. ''I cannot comment on the clinical details of these reports because that would breach the confidentiality of the doctor/patient relationship,'' Maharaj said in an interview with South Africa's Radio 702. HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Texas, the nation's busiest death penalty state, is set to mark a solemn moment in criminal justice Wednesday with the execution of convicted killer Kimberly McCarthy. If McCarthy is put to death in Huntsville as planned, she would become the 500th person executed in Texas since the state resumed carrying out the death penalty in 1982. The 52-year-old also would be the first woman executed in the U.S. since 2010. McCarthy's attorney, Maurie Levin, said she has exhausted all efforts to block the execution, after denials by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. ''If there was something to appeal, I would,'' said Levin. Texas has carried out nearly 40 percent of the more than 1,300 executions in the U.S. since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976. (AP) — Starbucks baristas must share their tips with shift supervisors, but assistant managers are left out in the cold, the state's highest court ruled Wednesday. The Court of Appeals found that shift supervisors do much of the same work as the coffee servers and therefore get to share in the tips. It also ruled that the company, which is based in Seattle, can deny those tips to assistant managers. The ruling, responding to two lawsuits, backed Starbucks' policy of divvying up the tips, saying it's consistent with labor law. Hospitality industry groups say the court's decision likely will affect policies at similar restaurants and coffee houses and will affect 42,000 businesses statewide and a quartermillion hospitality industry workers in New York City alone.
