4A Daily News – Thursday, June 27, 2013 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Unquenchable discussion to be aired The Biggest Book Club in the North State: Reading Water will be shown on KIXE, Channel 9, on Saturday, June 29, at 8 p.m. Featuring California State University, Chico's Book in Common 2012-13 selection, "Unquenchable," the video focuses on water issues affecting the North State. "Unquenchable" author Robert Glennon, who visited Chico in October 2012, noted that it was a first for his book to be selected as a book in common. "That the group would select a book about water says something about the DNA of Chico and of Northern California. Water has a special place in your lives, and having me here is a reflection of that." Rice farmer Lance Tennis and orchardist Bob Hennigan discuss water and agricultural issues, while Robyn DiFalco, director of the Butte Environmental Council, is interviewed about the twin tunnels project. Other interviews include Butte College faculty members Suzanne Gripenstraw and Tip Wilmarth; water activists Marty Dunlap, Nani Teves, Carol Perkins and Jim Brobeck; CSU, Chico faculty member Jesse Dizard and Undergraduate Education Dean Bill Loker; CSU, Chico AS Sustainability coordinator Eli Goodsell; and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute members Mike McCluskey, Jerry Dunham, Ellen Copeland, and Leslie Howard and program coordinator Ann Nikolai. The program captures the beauty of Butte Creek, the greening rice fields, Butte College's vineyards and several shots of the iconic Sacramento River, including the Sundial Bridge in Redding. The video was produced by CSU, Chico's Academic Technologies, including Dan Carter as chief videographer and co-director. Post-production creative work was done by Randy Wall and Morgan Schmidt. Theater professor Cynthia Lammel is the narrator, and music student Hugh Hammond composed the soundtrack. Debra Barger, CSU, Chico dean of the Center of Regional and Continuing Education, produced the program as part of the University's North State Initiative, an effort to strengthen the many connections between the school and the region. She sees the video as a template for future connections throughout the North State. "The Book in Common can link our region together over a single issue, and provide a strong identity and purpose," she said. Take a rollicking around-the-world musical adventure with this stylish 12-piece orchestra and vocalist as the Cascade Theatre presents Pink Martini on Wednesday, July 17, at 7:30pm. Every Pink Martini concert is a musical journey – enticing audiences to swing with Afro-Cuban rhythms, wallow in the existential sadness of Parisian café tunes, sway with some Caribbean calypso and then be transported to the big screen with a Hollywood golden-era string arrangement -- all of it polished to perfection. Describing itself as the "little orchestra," Pink Martini crosses genres such as classical, latin, jazz and classic pop. Featuring all the sounds of a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra to a classical chamber music ensemble, Pink Martini's music leaves audiences awestruck and craving more. "There's not a genre or pigeonhole anywhere that can diminish its (Pink Martini's) originality and lifeloving energy." - BBC Tickets are $39 - $59 and are available at the Cascade Theatre Box Office at 1733 Market Street in Redding, by phone at (530) 243-8877 or directly through the Cascade Theatre website at www.cascadetheatre.org.
