Students learn engineering Sacred Heart School is offering STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) as an elective to students in 5th through 8th grade. This engineering elective is directed at preparing students for careers in the STEM fields. Recently, students learned about skyscraper structure. Students were instructed to create the tallest newspaper tower they could, using only 10 pieces of newspaper and 36 inches of masking tape. Ms. Brands' instructed students to build towers that would withstand lateral wind force. Student towers ranged from 3 to 4 feet high and withstood all three settings on a box fan, although some towers did oscillate. Students were surprised at how strong their towers were. Most thought their towers would fall.
