December 5, 2012 www.DesertMessenger.com EdOptions High updates Submitted by Jorge Moreira Ed Options High School, so far, has been experiencing a great year of smooth productivity, and we expect that it will continue to run this way. We are expecting our AIMS results back before Christmas break. We are certain that each student did great on their testing. Students will go on Christmas break with the satisfaction of their achievements on the AIMS testing. Christmas break will be from December 22 to January 6, a relaxing two week vacation before starting the new year of school. Representatives from the Arizona Western College will be on campus Monday, December the 3rd, at 9:00 a.m. for a presentation. They will be here to inform students on the keys to a successful future and ways their goals can be achieved. We encourage students to attend the presentation. Also on Monday, we will be adding a physical education class to our daily schedule, for students who desire P.E. credits, or just another required elective class. The beginning of a new year can bring new changes to everyone in Quartzsite. In our case, our school hours will be changed as of January 1st, 2013. The new school hours will be from 8.00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with optional lab hours until 4:00 p.m. A new change to the school is something that takes time to get used to, but it is not a change that we cannot overcome. Both students and teachers have the same positive attitude that motivates each other for school each week. We have been receiving many new and returning students that wish to become part of the growing EOHS. All students with a desire to excel and achieve are always welcome. Free Booster seats still available Parker, AZ - Holiday travel season is here and La Paz County Health Department would like to remind residents about the child booster seat law that went into effect August 2nd. Children ages 5-8, who are shorter than 4 foot 9 inches (49), are required by law to be in a booster seat. The purpose of a booster seat is to make sure the vehicles seat belt ts the child. Booster seats are designed to guide the lap belt across upper thighs and the shoulder belt across chest. The health department received a grant from the Arizona Governors Ofce of Highway Safety to provide education, training and free backless booster seats to families in La Paz County. With this grant, we can provide free backless booster seats to families who need them, said Lee Page 17 Ann Anderson, Public Health Education and Prevention Program (PHEPP) Coordinator. Our goal is to see every child in La Paz County in a car seat. The booster seat grant made it possible for the PHEPP program to host a free car seat safety event last September. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Placing children in age and size appropriate car seats and booster seats reduces serious and fatal injuries. Booster seats reduce injury risk by 59% compared to seat belts alone. The La Paz County Health Departments PHEPP program has trained technicians who install the free booster seats. Residents can call 928-6691062 to make an appointment with one of the technicians.
