December 5, 2012 www.DesertMessenger.com Assessors Corner Series 2 of 7 Widow and Widower Property Tax Exemptions ATTENTION WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS, the La Paz County Assessor will be accepting applications for Property Tax Exemption for Widow and Widowers, between the months of January 1 and March 1 of 2013. The applications for Widows and Widowers are available at the County Assessors Ofce in the County in which your property is located. If you are an established and permanent resident of Arizona; have titled ownership on property to be exempted and have limited income. Then you may want to review the qualications for the tax relief program. You may call our ofce at (928) 669-6165 for additional information packet. A copy of the spouses death certicate must be on le with the County Recorders ofce. When the Assessor reviews the document on le, the usual residence, city and state; marital status; recording date, will play a factor in our decision. Or, if you were a resident of Arizona prior to January 1, 1969. If you remarry, you no longer qualify for the exemption. Residency is the other deciding factor of qualifying. All your identications, voter registrations, and vehicles, etc., must be Arizona registered at least one year prior to your application. If the issue date is less than that, then you must wait another year to apply. Unfortunately, you have to meet all deciding factors before we can approve your application. Income is another one. There is an income guideline on the amount of taxable income a house- hold is allowed to make. This means everyone that has income, which lives in your home, must report their income to the Assessor. Keep in mind, that the information that we receive is condential. The amount of taxable income varies, depending whether children reside in the household or not. For example: If children under the age of 18 reside with you, or a disabled child over 18 resides with you, then the amount you are able to make in taxable income is $36,009.00 (2013) but not to exceed that amount. If you have no children in the household, then the taxable income cannot exceed $30,009.00 (2013). These gures are recalculated each year, so heads up in 2014 if you dont qualify this up and coming year. Did you know, that if you qualify, and you have excess or left over exemption after the Assessor applies it to the property, you may apply the excess exemption to the Vehicle License Tax of your vehicles. But, you must be a titled owner of the vehicle and it must be registered in the State of Arizona. During the Property Tax Exemption application period, the La Paz County Assessors Ofce visits some of the outlying areas for your convenience and we notify our taxpayers through the media, radio, public announcement, cable, and post cards. Please take advantage of this service and watch for announcements during the Holiday season and throughout the application period. For additional information contact: La Paz County Assessor, 1112 Joshua Ave, Suite 204, Parker, Arizona 85344, and Phone: 928-669-6165. Again our hours are from 7:00 AM thru 6:00 PM, Monday thru Thursday.
