California State Univer- sity Chico's College of Ag- riculture will host its 14th annual Agriculture Career and Internship Fair 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the University Farm Pavil- ion, 311 Nicolas C. Schouten Lane in Chico. With companies like Fos- ter Farms, Helena Chemi- cal Company, Nationwide Agribusiness, Tanimura & Antle and The Tremont Group, along with several others registered to attend, students will have a wide range of opportunities to embrace. The Agriculture Career and Internship Fair was established in 2004 to fa- cilitate connections be- tween companies that are hiring and college students who are ready to enter the workforce. Companies that attend will have the oppor- tunity to meet students and alumni who have studied agriculture business, agri- cultural education, animal science, and crops, horti- culture and land resource management. More information can be found online at www. csuchico.edu/ag/resources/ career-fair.shtml. COLLEGEOFAG 14th annual career and internship fair set The 76th annual Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale had record prices for the dogs and geldings, and re- flect lower market prices for the bulls. It was huge crowds, and they were buy- ing; art, the Trade Show, dogs, horses and bulls. Clear weather with a chill north wind, but the parking lots were muddy from the previous weeks' rain. Buyer and Consignor dinner on Wednesday night had more than 600 people enjoying a New York steak dinner, since Vic Woolery's crew had 600 steaks precut. So tender and delicious, you could cut it with a plastic knife. The Jack Alford Memo- rial Buckle is now known as Consignor of the Year award. Don and Diane Cardey, Cardey Ranches, Turlock, who entered 5 bulls received the title again this year. At the start of the bull sale, auctioneer Rick Mach- ado mentioned "last night at the horse sale, a ring- man went down. We travel a lot of miles together, working the sales. We are closer than our broth- ers at home." Rick had a hard time speaking, be- cause John Dickinson was in Enloe Hospital, and we were worried. A week later I heard that he has been released to go home. My room-mate in Nashville kept me up-dated on his condition. The dog sale had In- ternet Bidding, via the LiveAuctions.tv website, and John Dickinson was handling the site for bid- ding buyers not present in Red Bluff. The Andy Peek Livestock Scholarship Fund recog- nized the 13 recipients that surfaced from the 32 appli- cants. $2,000 Corte Smith, Crescent Mills; $1,500 to Kadon Leddy, Stock- holm, SD; Vaeriana Ur- ricelqui, Palo Cedro; Wes- ley Woolery, Fort Collins, CO; Kayla McGiffin, Red Bluff. $1,000 to Tyler Huf- ford, North Powder, OR; Brooke Niederhauser, San Luis Obispo; Ryan Gifford, Eagle Point, OR; Chloe Fowler, Igo-Ono; Ky- ler Puckett, Red Bluff; Erin Clendenen, Cottonwood; Wayde Henderson, Cotton- wood; Adam Blalock, Mill- ville. The 14 dogs sold for an average of $6,125. We were proud of the Art Show that Jane Daugh- erty, Vina cattlewoman managed, using Facebook to show case the western art entered and for sale. I heard many compliments on the quality of the items entered in the Art Show. "Good Morning Red Bluff", a monthly Red Bluff- Tehama County Cham- ber of Commerce event drew more than 60 busi- ness people from the com- munity when the Tehama County CattleWomen hosted in the Western Art Show serving hot cof- fee, hot biscuits with but- ter, homemade jams, fruit and juice. Irene Fuller was chairman with assistance from Jeanne Smith, Joyce Bundy, Darci Richeson, Lynn Chamblin, Jean Bar- ton, Linda Borror, Mandi Selvester Owens and Jane Daugherty. The Art Show Wine and Cheese Tasting on Thurs- day evening drew many enroute to watching the dogs and horses working inside Pauline Davis Pa- vilion. Many of the artists were present at the event. The Stock Dog catalog did not list who judged the dogs. ••• Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, many friends gathered in McArthur to honor the memory of Tom and Ma- rie Vestal, who had passed away within 18 hours of each other, earlier in Jan- uary. I worked with Tom Ves- tal, DVM when he was President of District 1 Cal- ifornia High School Ro- deo when Tami and Hardy competed. A great friend and leader for high school rodeo. Marie would record the event winners and their times using carbon pa- per to make copies, so the members from the differ- ent areas would have the results for their local news- paper. Their sons Mark and Hardy remembered "ma" and "pa" with stories about growing up on a ranch. Grandson Steel Humphry told about playing cards with his grandmother. I have forgotten the name of the man who went to school with Tom. Some- one told a story about the Vestal's going to buy 3 colts and ended up with 6, since Tom had told Marie that half will be good and half won't. Joyful memo- ries from the family and friends. There were ranchers, fel- low veterinarians, neigh- bors, rodeo friends, fam- ily, from near and far at the memorial service because they had made an impact on many people during their lives.
