Advocates began fielding calls Thursday from immi- grants and their lawyers re- porting raids at homes and businesses in the greater Los Angeles area. In one in- stance, agents knocked on one door looking for a man and ended up arresting an- other who is in the country illegally but has no criminal record — something Angel- ica Salas, the executive di- rector of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said would not likely have happened previously. "This was not normal," Salas told reporters Friday. Immigration and Cus- toms Enforcement arrested about 160 people during a five-day sweep in Southern California aimed at immi- grants with criminal histo- ries and deportation orders, including a Salvadoran gang member wanted in his country and a Brazilian drug trafficker. David Marin, ICE field office director for enforce- ment and removal opera- tions in greater Los Ange- les, said the agency carries out these operations two or three times a year in his re- gion. "These operations take weeks and sometimes months of planning, so this operation was in the plan- ning stages before the ad- ministration came out with their current executive or- ders," he told reporters. He said similar opera- tions took place this week in Atlanta, New York and Chicago. Marinsaid151ofthosear- rested in Southern Califor- nia had criminal records. He said five people would not have met the Obama ad- ministration's enforcement priorities but were arrested because they were found to be in the country illegally. The announcement of the arrests comes days after an Arizona woman was ar- restedanddeportedto Mex- ico after what she thought was a routine check in with immigration officials and amid heightened anxiety among immigrant commu- nities since Trump signed anexecutiveordertoexpand deportations. A decade ago, immigra- tion officers searching for specific individuals would often arrest others found along the way, a practice thatdrewcriticism fromad- vocates. Under the Obama administration, agents also carried out arrests but fo- cusedmorenarrowlyonspe- cific individuals. In the suburbs of Los Angeles, 50-year-old house painter Manuel Mosqueda was there when his fiancé answeredthedoor,thinking it was police, his 21-year-old daughter Marlene said. "They were looking for someone else and they took my dad in the process," she said. KarlaNavarrete,a lawyer forCHIRLA,saidshesought to stop Mosqueda from be- ing placed on a bus to Mex- ico and was told by ICE that things had changed. It's a change that puts the Grammys in the front ranks of awards diversity. "To be honest, the idea of a 'trophy girl' has felt anti- quated for some time now," Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, said in a statement Friday. "Who wrote that rule any- way? The ability to present a trophy has nothing to do with one's gender." The change wasn't made to be provocative or buck convention, he added, but to acknowledge that "mu- sic's universal power lies in its spirit of inclusion" for all people and their voices. In recent years, the Acad- emy Awards has replaced its female trophy presenters with male and female film students, both American and from countries includ- ing China and Zimbabwe. That mix stood in contrast to the largely white slate of nominees, finally relieved this year by several nods for African-American artists in- cluding Denzel Washington ("Fences").
