Whointheworldsaid, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me," and why? Do they en- joy lying? Words do hurt. They hurt a lot. In my expe- rience, they hurt more than sticks and stones ever could. Sticks and stones pain hurts for a few hours, but I've seen words pain endure life- times, even generations. There are very few things more powerful than words. I grew up in a good home with good parents. I had very little to com- plain about and very little reason to complain. I was around lots of good words, like, "You're smart. You're handsome. You're kind." But I also heard some not-so-good words, "You're dumb. What's wrong with you? You ruin everything." As much as I wish I could say only the good words affected me, alas, it's not true. The not-so-good ones were the stronger ones, and they began to define me. "There is something wrong with me. I do ruin everything. I am dumb." I could not get away from them, they haunted me, and I began to believe there was no hope. That was until I heard of The Word. This word changed everything. It was stronger than the dark words; it was stron- ger than any word I'd ever encountered. For the first time, because of this Word, I felt free — because I was free. This Word is not a merely human word. Its or- igins are not of this world. It is from God. Even more radically, this Word is God, which is why it is the greatest Word, stronger than all other words. This Word is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is God Himself speaking to us. He is The Word, and He comes speaking words like salva- tion, freedom, peace, hope, and eternal life. He has the power to rid us all of dark words, like hate, abuse, bit- terness, guilt, shame, noth- ingness, and suicide. And He is able to work in our souls new words like forgiveness, redemption, new life, love, joy, peace, promise, purpose, and hope. He longs to define us, love us, and take care of us. In Him our souls find rest because all the words He speaks are good words. How did I come across this Word? The Bible. How did I let this Word into my heart? By taking Him at His word, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Ro- mans 10:13). Saved. That's exactly what happened to me. This Word sets us free. There are few things more powerful than words, and there is nothing more powerful than The Word. The Bible says He is life. That means He has life, brings life, and is able to se- cure life for us, forever. All we have to do is let Him in and then walk out what He says, both in His written word, the Bible, and in His living word, the Holy Spirit who comes to live in us the moment we place our trust in Jesus. From every angle, through Jesus, God begins to speak to us, guide us, and love on us. He surrounds us with His words! And, as we fill up on His words, we will find an abundance of good words to share with others, the most important one being, Him. Are you a parent? Know your words are strong, use them to strengthen your children, and make sure they know The Word. Are you a spouse? Know your words are power- ful, use them to lift up your spouse, and encour- age them towards the most powerful Word. Are you a teacher? Know your words are wise, use them to teach students the best words, and don't for- get to teach them the best Word of all. Are you a pastor? Know your words are anointed, let the Holy Spirit use them in your ministry, and in all your words, because we know they are many, never forget the most im- portant Word, the only one that can save people and set them free, Jesus Christ and Him crucified. There are very few things more powerful than words, and nothing is more powerful than The Word. Jesus changes all our words, because Jesus changes our hearts, and at the end of the day, He's the only word that matters. To Him be, all the glory, honor, and praise, forever and ever. And, with one word, they all said — Amen. ChrisLussierandhiswife Sheena are the parents of Joslyn, 3, and Christian, 1. GODTALK The power of words in our life and beyond Experience an eve- ning of ritual and spiri- tual practice rich in cul- tural diversity dedicated to the unique expressions of Spirit in its many forms at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 17 at Center for Spiritual Living, 1905 Hartnell Ave. in Redding. INTERFAITH Inviting the Sacred event set in Redding Chris Lussier CONTRIBUTED The Associated Press SOSNOVKA, RUSSIA A vil- lage in Siberia that did not have a church until this winter is getting a lesson in faith and life's ephem- eral nature. Sosnovka resident Al- exander Batyokhtin spent nearly two months building a village church entirely out of snow. The structure will vanish with the season. Batyokhtin worked on the chapel every day, even when temperatures plunged below minus 30 degrees Celsius (-22 Fahr- enheit.) He used 12 cubic metres (424 cubic feet) of snow to make it. Batyokhtin says the work wasn't difficult. His biggest challenges were fashioning the altar and a cross for the roof. "The main thing is to say a prayer and keep a fast for some time, then just go and do it," he says. Sosnovka administrator Yuriy Kirsh says the church "means a lot to our hearts and souls" despite being temporary. SIBERIA Russian man builds church of snow THE ASSOCIATED PRESS In this image made from video, a chapel made of snow is seen in Sosnovka, Russia, Wednesday.
