Proverbs 24:3-4 I've been doing a little decorating. We've been in our house for five years now, and things are s-l- o-w-l-y coming together. I would like to think I'll be finished soon. I'd love to get everything just like I want it and leave it that way- forever! The frustrating thing is I will probably never really be done. While I work at making my house inviting, I've been thinking about how God is constantly working to redecorate my life. I'm glad He doesn't become frustrated because there's no end to the work that needs doing. Several years ago, as I was reading Proverbs 24:3-4, I sensed God speaking to me about this and wrote the following in my journal: I will build my temple in your heart through wisdom and establish it through understanding. I will fill it with rare and beautiful treasures as you learn of Me. As you spend time with Me, and know Me better, I will replace the dingy furnishings in your heart with priceless jewels to give away. Surprisingly, what I'm finding is that sometimes I'd rather hang onto the dingy furnishings than wel- come the priceless jewels. Of course, I don't see it that way when I'm in the middle of it. Sometimes what God moves into my life doesn't seem like a jewel at all, and I have to remind myself that He only gives good gifts. Matthew 7:9-11 says, "What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him?" One Christmas, many years ago, my daughter, Jaynee, asked for a fluffy kitten. My husband and I didn't particularly want a cat, but Jaynee wanted one so much that, two days before Christmas, we went in search of one. (Please tell me we're not the only parents who do things like this!) We found a beautiful grey Himalayan kitten, and Jaynee could not have been more pleased. Everything seemed to be going great until around the second of January when several of our family members began to develop a rash. After consulting a doctor, I took the cat to the vet. Although she looked perfectly healthy, when the vet put her under a light, he was able to see that there was a fungus on her tail. I had to quarantine the kitty while I treated both her and my children. Gifts are not always what they seem. We thought we were giving Jaynee a good gift, but it didn't turn out that way. God, on the other hand, does just the opposite. He may bring something into my life that doesn't look like a good gift to me; in fact it may look an awful lot like a snake. It's only when I bring it under the light of His Word that I'm reminded, if it's from my Father, it's a fish! Lots of times I never fully understand how something that looks like a snake to me is actually a fish. I just have to believe it because God's Word says it's true. Other times, God is gracious enough to give me a glimpse of His purpose. Sometimes He even throws in a humorous twist. You see, the story of the kitty didn't end with the rash. The cat recovered, but one of our children had to undergo months of treatment, so we decided the kitten needed a new home. A business acquaintance from Philadelphia wanted her, so we put her on a plane and off she flew on a grand adventure. After her arrival, her new mistress began frequenting a certain pet shop. One day, the kit- ten went missing. The pet shop owner joined in the search for her and soon she was found. It's at this point in the story that our kitty turns out to be a fish, after all, because soon after her rescue, her new owner and the pet-shop-man fell in love and got married. We lost touch with them, but I like to think that they're still living happily ever after! Of course, that's not really the end of the story either because here I am, twenty years later, writing about, and still learning from, the cat that looked like a snake, but was really a fish!
