PATRIOT GUARD RIDERS The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse group of patriots from ever y state that come together to honor fallen soldiers at funeral ser vices across the countr y. Visit w w w. patriotguard.org for more information about the group. This year has just flown by. It is that time again where I suggest some gift ideas for the motorcy- clist in your life. One thing that most people do not think about giving their favorite rider is training. This is not only a great gift but also an investment in safety and in making driving a more enjoyable experi- ence. No matter how long someone has been rid- ing, training should always be one of those things that is kept current. I recently sent my wife to MOTOMARK's Maximum Control course. They offer a variety of classes, which cover motorcycle control, dirt, dual sport riding and even law enforcement training. MOTOMARK offers gift cer- tificates. Check them out at www.motomark1.com or call 919-637-0947. Aerostich offers the Go Cruise, Universal Throttle Control (www.aerostich. com). This simple device is the best cruise control on the market. It takes less than a minute to put on and is only $30. This is a perfect stocking stuffer. Gerbing makes some fantastic heated gear. I personally have the jacket and gloves. Be sure to buy the separate controller. It allows the wearer to control the amount of heat it provides. The beauty of this gear is that riding in 40 degree weather is very enjoyable. M&M Leather on Bragg Boulevard has a nice selection. Speaking of riding in cold weather. Check out the assortment of Balaclavas at Cycle Gear on McPherson Church Road. There you will find the largest variety of accessories and riding gear in town. For the Harley families, check out Fort Bragg Harley-Davidson on Sycamore Dairy Road. There you can get just about anything Harley-Davidson. If motorcycling is an extension of the soul, then a GPS is an extension of the mind. I have often written about the joys of how a GPS will change a driving experience. Garmin.com currently offers two motorcycle variations. The 390LM is going for $599. The 590LM is going for $899. The 590LM includes features that incorporate media integration, updated weather and traffic features and much more. The price for a motorcycle GPS is significantly more expensive than a standard car GPS because a motorcycle GPS is designed to withstand the vibration of the motorcycle and the wearing of gloves. It also has to be weath- erproof. To learn more about motorcycle GPSs check out Garmin's website for a complete comparison. Last year, my friend wanted to buy someone a nice helmet. Although this was great news and a wonderful gift idea, helmet sizes are hard to judge. Helmet sizes seem to change based on the manufacturer and everyone has a different head size and face shape. The helmet should be snug and comfortable. For my friend, when we looked at prices, he decided a gift certificate was perfect. If you are not sure if your rider needs a new helmet, then look at their helmet for these signs. If the helmet is more than five years old, then it's time for a new one. The protective materials break down at this point. If the helmet is chipped or cracked in any way (regardless of time), then it is time for a new helmet. If the helmet does not have a "DOT" or "SNELL" label, then it is definitely time for a new helmet. If you are not familiar with DOT or SNELL standards, they are the only legally approved helmets for motorcycling. One of my favorite gifts is a Spirit Bell. A Spirit Bell is a small bell that people give their motorcycle friends to ward off evil spirits while riding. You can usu- ally find them at any motorcycle store at around $5. I hope everyone has a safe holiday season and a Happy New Year. If there is a topic that you would like to discuss you can contact me at motorcycle4fun@aol.com. RIDE SAFE!
