16 UCW NOV. 26 - DEC. 2, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM As the temperature begins to drop outside this season, things are heating up in the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration program at Fayetteville Technical Community College. The HVAC/R program is one of the most popular programs at FTCC, where students can earn an associate degree, diploma or certificate. Options are avail- able for daytime and night classes where specific training is provided to students pursu- ing a career in the HVAC/R industry. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the HVAC/R Industry is projected to grow at a rate of 21 percent through the year 2020, as compared to the average of 11 percent of all occupations com- bined. The demand is high for skilled technicians in this area. FTCC's HVAC/R program offers more than 6,500 square feet of lab space consisting of heat pumps, gas-fired furnaces, oil-fired furnaces, walk-in and reach-in commercial coolers/ freezers, ice machines, boilers, chillers and industrial equip- ment across the entire FTCC Campus used for heating and cooling its many buildings. This gives FTCC stu- dents the opportunity to receive hands-on training on a wide range of equipment. The program also has its own dedicated computer lab with computer-based equipment simulators and the latest version of load calculation software used to properly size residential HVAC equipment. The instructors of the program, David Dauria, John Jennings, Darrell Smith and Department Chair Justin Hawkes, are graduates of the HVAC/R associate degree program and have many years of field experience and licenses that include commercial refrigeration, residential/heavy commercial heating and air conditioning, and electrical controls. Graduates from the associate degree program will have the training and skills needed for entry-level positions, such as service technicians of residential/com- mercial heating and air conditioning equipment, commercial refrigeration equip- ment and many other avenues throughout the HVAC/R industry. High school juniors and seniors are also encouraged to enroll in the HVAC/R certificate program during the school day through the High School Connections program. Interested students should contact their high school counselors or con- tact us for more information. One of the last things most homeowners think about is their heating and cool- ing systems — that is, until there is a problem. Most manufacturers recommend that your heating and cooling system be cleaned and serviced twice a year to ensure the optimum efficiency and longevity of your system. Chances are good that when the technician arrives to service your system, he or she will be a grad- uate of the FTCC Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration program. At FTCC, our slogan is "education for life," meaning that no matter where you are along life's journey, FTCC has something fulfilling to offer through education.
