20 UCW NOV. 26 - DEC. 2, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM I love Christmas music. No, I love it. I adore it. Just hearing the jingle-jingle of bells in the background, or the rat-tat-tat of the snare drum in "Little Drummer Boy," puts an extra bounce in my step. I wish it played on at least one radio sta- tion in our city year round, so at that moment in the heat of summer when all you want to do is pour ice down the back of your shirt (or maybe fill your bath- tub with ice water and submerge yourself because you just can't stop perspir- ing), you could perhaps remedy the situation by tricking your mind into think- ing it's actually cold outside. Ok, picture this, it's July and you're sweaty (and I mean sweaty) just from walking from your car into work because of the sticky humidity. Never fear! Just tune into "Blah blah Christmas Radio 24/7" and let Bing Crosby convince you how frightful the weather is and that just like you, he's "dreaming of a White Christmas." See? It really would have a purpose! it's not only mood-boosting, it's practical too. Ok, ok — so I realize my ingenious idea is pretty far-fetched. Many, if not most, people are staunchly against Christmas music any time of the year other than the short period of time between the day after Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. I would have to agree that these few weeks do offer a more appropriate listening period, despite my vision to help those in desperate need of relief in the heat of summer. (Dramatic, I know.) it's a good thing that Thanksgiving is here! it's time for the Christmas music season! We've been crafting this year's playlist of Christmas music at WCLN since early fall — reorganizing, rethinking and redesigning what Christmas should sound like on the station. As always, we are striving to "Keep The Main Thing, The Main Thing," as our slogan so aptly says. How is that different from any other year, you ask? We believe, and feel our lis- teners do as well, that the Christmas season isn't about doing something good for someone else just because it's Christmas — our lives should reflect that joy and love for people every single day we live because of the hope we have in Jesus. So, this year, you probably won't hear a lot of those Christmas tear-jerking song-stories, but more light, more life and more wintery celebration. We hope our station will be a refuge from the storm, blizzard if you will, of the make-you- feel-guilty-you-haven't-been-serving songs, and keep reminding you that Christ did come and He changed everything. He couldn't love you any more or any less, and He left His throne on high to grace this earth as a lowly human. He took on every single sin, past, present and future, so that we could know His saving love and grace that covers every bit of unrighteousness we have. He is the light, He is the joy that surrounds Christmas. Happy listening!
