SEPTEMBER 24-30, 2014 UCW 9 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM There's a madman wandering the countryside and everyone is a suspect. No one can be trusted and only an inspector can find the true killer. If this has you curious, Methodist University's Department of Theater can satisfy you as it produces The Real Inspector Hound Oct. 2-4 at 8 p.m. and Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. The Real Inspector Hound is a short one-act play written by Tom Stoppard. Its premier was June 17, 1968. It was written between 1961 and 1962. Stoppard used some of his experiences as a critic and his imagination to create a play within a play. The cast consists of 10 main characters, four being critics and six being apart of the play within the play. Now this all sounds confusing, but this play makes for more realistic entertainment. The characters and the critics' personal thoughts and drama are all a part of the mystery. While the London theater critics are set to review a play about a murder mystery, their thoughts, actions and interactions with the actors overlap into the story. A parody of Agatha Christie style murder mysteries, this who done it starts with two critics commenting from the audience about a play. They eventually get pulled into the storyline of the play and lines between the performers and critics become entangled making the critics part of the story as well. This production includes both student and faculty as well as community members. The theater department holds four performances a year, which include productions by students. The theater department provides opportunities for anyone looking to creatively express themselves and grow artistically through self-expression. The productions each year give theater majors a chance to build foundations as true thespians by experiencing first-hand the stresses and joys that come with putting together a show. Most importantly, it helps prepare future performers for the rigors of their profession while bringing high-quality entertainment to the community. Rehearsals are ongoing, and the cast is working diligiently to ensure they are ready for the curtain to rise. Teresa Hammonds, a Fayetteville native, will play Felicity one of the characters in the play. "I am a theater major, my professors are brilliant teachers and people. I have been in theater since I was 9-years-old. I have been in many different productions, but at Methodist I've been in Doubt, Works in Progress, and now the Real Inspector Hound," said Hammonds. Even though she is no stranger to the stage, Hammonds noted that it is still nerve-wracking to take the stage. "I study for every class the same. Well, you have to practice and practice then practice some more, but then when you start your lines on opening night the nerves go away," she said. The production will take place in Huff Concert Hall in the Reeves Fine Arts building.
