The region has a long and colorful agricultural history. Where now there are schools and stores, there would have been acres of North Carolina's famous cash crop: tobacco. The Cape Fear Botanical Garden is celebrating this simple and honest way of life by hosting the 11th Annual Heritage Festival on Oct. 5. The focus of the festival is learning about and appreciating the roots and history of the region. Daily life for those living in the Cape Fear Region then and now are worlds apart. There was little to no electricity and butter came fresh from churned milk. The festival will, in many ways, simulate a typical day on the farm. It will take place in the Heritage Garden Complex, which includes a farmhouse, a general store and a tobacco barn. Kids of all ages are invited to try their hand at the butter churn and try other typical daily chores on the farm. After a bit of hard work, relax in the traditional way through music, games and story telling. These glimpses into the past provide not only a full day of fun, but bring to life the history of the region in a very tangible way. Understanding the lives and challenges that our predecessors faced in the past creates an appreciation for their hard work. Another big part of life in the period was the art of quilting. The tradition of quilting in America came across the ocean with the very first European settlers. At first they were used as bedcovers or for blocking the cold from a poorly sealed door or window. Eventually, quilts became much more decorative and were passed down as family heirlooms for generations. Once, it was common for every woman in a family to make quilts, but the tradition has faded over the years. The Tarheel Quilters Guild is working to carry on this important cultural tradition. It is a nonprofit organization "dedicated to promoting and perpetuating the art of quilting." In conjunction with the Heritage Festival, the guild will hold a judged quilt show called "Floral Fantasy" in the Wyatt Visitor Pavilion Complex in the garden. This includes a silent auction, raffle quilt and hand-quilting demonstrations. This show will clearly demonstrate that a quilt is much more than a cozy blanket. It is a beautiful art form that preserves the nation's and the region's history. Kids are also invited to participate in crafts at the kids' activity table. The Master Gardeners and the FTCC Horticulture Department will also host a plant sale. Admission into the sale is free. Daily Garden Admission fees apply to the Heritage Festival and "Floral Fantasy" Quilt Show. For more information visit http://www.capefearbg.org/event/11th-annual- heritage-festival-2/?instance_id=977 or call 486-0221. The Garden is located at 536 N. Eastern Blvd. The Heritage Festival is on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Daily admission into the garden is $10, $9 for military and seniors, $5 for children ages 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. The Cape Fear Botanical Garden hosts the Heritage Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5.
