30 UCW SEPTEMBER 24-30, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM For many Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) students, lunch is valuable time used to run personal errands, to meet with friends, to exercise or to simply relax before their next scheduled class. But some FTCC students take advantage of their lunch time by taking convenient classes. FTCC's Bragg Center began hosting lunchtime classes in August at the Bragg Training and Education Center (BTEC), as part of FTCC's efforts to continually implement new approaches to better serve students. Classes offered during noon-time sessions are designed to meet general education curriculum requirements, such as the areas of English, math, and public speaking. FTCC provided similar lunchtime classes for a few military units last year but this is the first time classes have been incorporated into the regular academic term schedule. A total of 76 students signed up for the initial series of lunchtime classes, an indication that these classes offer convenience for many students. Lunchtime classes will be offered during fall and spring semesters in ways that help students meet their educational objectives. For example, a student who takes English 111 during the first term will have the option to take the sequential English class, English 112, the following term. Many students find that lunchtime classes complement busy schedules by freeing up evenings to spend more time with family and friends or to pursue other interests. Lunchtime classes are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., in F Wing at the BTEC. Courses last eight weeks and meet face-to-face once a week for 50 minutes. The class is primarily delivered online (90 percent) but incorporates some face-to-face interaction (10 percent). Students enjoy the weekly face-to-face interaction with instructors and other students and benefit by retaining the flexibility offered through an online format. Instructors enjoy the opportunity to interact with soldiers on soldiers' home turf. Lunchtime classes at Fort Bragg are open to all FTCC students — students don't have to be in the military to attend these classes. Students without access to enter Fort Bragg can visit the All American Visitor's Center prior to the startup of classes to obtain a visitor's pass for the duration of their classes. Obtaining a visitor's pass is an easy process and only takes a few minutes. Fall Term II 8-week lunchtime classes, which begin October 16, include the following: • Writing / Inquiry (ENG 111) on Tuesdays • Introduction to Criminal Justice (CJC 111) on Wednesdays • Quantitative Literacy (MAT 143) on Thursdays Current students can register now through WebAdvisor for one of the above lunchtime classes. FTCC will continue to modify course availability of lunchtime classes to provide courses that best meet the demands and interests of students. Feedback from students and instructors has been overwhelmingly positive. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved. Contact FTCC today at (910) 678-1050 or fortbragg@ faytechcc.edu to learn more about lunchtime classes and about the many opportunities available at FTCC. FTCC's Fort Bragg Center is conveniently located in the Bragg Training and Education Center, 4520 Knox Street, F Wing, Building 1-3571, Fort Bragg, NC 28310 and provides counseling, registration, and testing services for the convenience of military personnel and their families.
