The Palo Verde Root Borer is a member of the beetle family, the largest group of insects in the world. This beetle feeds mostly on roots of the Palo Verde trees [Parkinsonia]. This beetle feeds on all varieties of Palo Verde, but likes the Mexican Palo Verde [Parkinsonia aculeata] best. Recognizing this insect should not be a problem if they appear in your landscape. The adult is up to 4 inches long and is mostly black. Early summer is when these insects appear. They have a very long life cycle, about three years. The larvae is white and can be up to fi ve inches in length. In case of a severe infestation tree roots can be damaged to the point of branch die back. There is no real cure. The best way to resist this beetle is to keep your trees as healthy as possible. If you see quarter sized round holes around the base of your tree, you may have had this insect. The quarter sized round holes are exit holes made by the female. Adult beetles live only a month or so, but the eggs will become larve and the larve will tunnel to the root and begin feeding. They will stay under ground feeding for about the next three years. If you have questions about your landscape contact us. Janice Shelton, La Paz County Super- intendent of Education has announced a vacancy on the Arizona Western College (AWC) District Governing Board representing La Paz District #1. Board member JoAnne Ehasz (\'E- haus\), who was appointed by Shelton in August of 2013, has announced her resignation from the board due to relocation. Ehasz was appointed August 1, 2013 to complete the term of Randy Hartless with a term scheduled to run through December 31, 2014. AWC Board opening The position will be on the November ballot for a six year term. Interested candidates can stop by Shelton's of- fi ce to pick up a packet. The fi rst date to fi le is July 7; the last day to fi le is August 6. Shelton's offi ce is open 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
