WED. JUNE 1, 2011 Vol. 7 Issue #132 N O! www.DesertMessenger.com 4th of July Fireworks planned - with changes! QUARTZSITE, AZ- Quartzsite Fire Department announced there will be changes to the annual event on 4th of July held at the park. Fire Chief Kevin Hess made his decision to change the location of the spectators from the dance slab to the football fi eld based on new information received regarding the new phyrotechnics being used for the Quartzsite 4th of July celebration. “The bottom line is this, we need 70 feet of clear, open space per inch of aerial device to allow us to light off the 8” mortars which we use on the forth. (560 feet total),” said Chief Hess. “This in- formation was conveyed to us during our annual pyrotechnics refresher, so in the name of safety I think that it is prudent to relocate spectators.” For years, spectators and local organizations have gathered for the annual celebration under the shel- ter at the “Dance Slab”. With the change of location, Operation Hero Comfort, in cooperation with the Town of Quartzsite and Quartzsite Fire Dept. will be organizing the activities at the park, starting at 6 pm. The Fire Dept. will be providing their slide show just prior to the fi reworks display at dusk. If your organization would like to set up, please call Anita Carlson at 928-927-4292, or 763-639-0330, cell. Carlson needs volunteers to help with selling T-shirts for the Fire Dept. and selling 50-50 raffl e tickets. Op- eration Hero Comfort is a small non-profi t group send- ing care packages to our troops serving in harms way. Chief Hess said, “Personally, my interest is safety and once I was made aware of the inherent risk, I decided it would be better to move the spectators, or relocate the fi ring area. Relocating the fi ring area is not really an option at this point.” So bring your chairs and blankets, enjoy the sum- mer evening on the cool grass of the football fi eld, and watch the new fi reworks display on Monday, July 4th! “Quartzsite’s FREE Community Paper” Memorial Day Services held at Hi Jolly Cemetery QUARTZSITE, AZ.
