Doesn’t that all sound great? Change, whether in our personal life or in the community, often creates confl ict. We humans, just naturally resist change. But sometimes confl ict is a necessity. If we could all stop taking things so personal, and drop our expectations, there will be less confl ict in our lives. When we “cling” onto our old ways of thinking, we remain stagnant, and confl ict can occur. In Saturday’s L.A. Times, Quartzsite was the feature article with the head- line, “Desert town clings to its quirki- ness”. They say any publicity is good publicity, so thank you L.A. Times for your interesting article. However, according to www.thefreedic- tionary.com to “cling” means: 1. To hold fast or adhere to something, as by grasping, sticking, embracing, or entwining: clung to the rope to keep from falling; fabrics that cling to the body. 2. To remain close; resist separation: We clung together in the storm. 3. To remain emotionally attached; hold on: clinging to outdated customs. A���� 20, 2011 “We cling to our own point of view, as though everything depended on it. Yet our opinions have no permanence; like autumn and winter, they gradually pass away.”~ Zhuangzi Life in Quartzsite is obviously not the same as it was 30 years ago. RVs still fi ll the BLM lands, people are still friendly, vendors still sell their treasures, friends gather to enjoy the weather, deals are found at every corner, and still people complain about the “good old days”. The Quartzsite political scene has changed over the years, even though old timers are still quoting, “they’re trying to turn Quartzsite into Palm Springs”, when that statement was made by someone in power 5 mayors ago! Ru- mors “cling” in the air because people keep repeating them. The media is also perpetuating these rumors, once again, just now on a larger scale. A local media outlet claims people praising the positive attributes of our town is misleading readers. Facts are facts, folks! We’re not just a truck stop town! Conflicting ideas can be very important to a community. Confl ict, however uncomfortable, moves us out of our comfort zone. How we respond as a growing community, will determine the future of our town. The media is famous for “spinning” something. In Life Coaching, we focus on how to “spin” the negative into a positive. So...Do we “cling” together to keep from falling prey to negative infl u- ences? How can we use the infl uence of the L.A. Times article to booster a peaceful community in Quartzsite?
