P 4 WHY ARE THE REASONABLE QUARTZ- SITE VENDOR FEES SO CONTROVERSIAL? dents think vendors should not have to pay any fees. The 3500 residents of Quartzsite can’t possibly pay for the in- frastructure needed for the huge influx of Winter visitors. In addition to the massive infrastructure costs, manag- ing the large number of vendors is very expensive for the town. It’s great for Quartzsite that the vendors and snow- birds come here in the Winter, but they need to help with the town costs. I understand the proposed six months vendor fees for 2010-2011 season is $50 or $25 for just the Pow Wow. I’m a registered Pow Wow vendor and feel the $25 vendor fee for the three day show is very fair. The $50 six month vendor fee seems way too low to me, and it certainly should not be any lower. I doubt the $50 fee pays for even our town’s cost of managing the vendors. For one day events, the event organizer could be charged one vendor fee, then include a reasonable fee in what they charge the event vendors. I’ve heard vendors say they are not coming back because they could not make a profit with the high Quartzsite vendor fees, which is absurd. This poor economy obviously makes it very difficult for any business to make a profit. When times are tough, many people that used to come to Quartzsite in the Winter may decide to stay home, and the people who do come to Quartzsite “THE PEOPLE’S VOICE” Letters to Editor Policy Desert Messenger encourages letters from its readers. Please don’t in- sult our intelligence by saying the $50 vendor fee is the reason they could not make a profit. Proud Quartzsite Resident A REBUTTAL ON THE TOWN THAT NEVER SHOULD BEEN To the editor, Come, come Mr. Miller, have you no shame? The Gem Newspaper from the beginning of Quartzsite’s incorpora- tion, before you were editor, supported tow former radical administrations. One would have thought that when you became editor your would have grasped the opportunity to support the town. A publisher has more opportunity than THE PEOPLE’S VOICE BULLY NO MAS Ron Jones and challenging conflict. At home, school and work, on the Internet, in politics and religion we sometimes face conflict requiring us to take action. There are times in our lives when we must take the bully by the horns and it is imperative for us to understand that we are not acting against the bully, we are acting for ourselves! Drunk driving, road rage, cyberspace attacks, school yards and classrooms, at home, in the workplace, at hospitals and doctor’s clinics, even across all so- cial services we go up against repetitive, intentional and disrespectful bullying behavior. BLM TO BEGIN GATHER OF WILD BURROS From Cibola-Trigo Herd Management Area in Arizona The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Yuma Field Office plans to be- gin gathering 100 burros from the Ci- bola-Trigo Herd Management Area near Blythe, California, starting Saturday, September 25, 2010. BLM expects the gather to last no more than three days. “Our goal is to manage for healthy public lands and healthy wild burros,” said Todd Shoaff, BLM Yuma Field Manager. “We made the decision to conduct this gather after extensive pub- lic input and review of the best scientific information available to us.” The BLM will gather 100 wild burros, leaving a total of 500 wild burros in the area, which is still above the appropri- ate management level (AML) for this herd of 165. AML is the point at which the herd’s population is consistent with the land’s capacity to support wild burros or horses in balance with other public rangeland uses and resources. All gathered animals will be exam- ined, and if needed, treated by a veteri- narian. All animals will be transported to the BLM Ridgecrest facility and made available for adoption to citizens willing and prepared to provide good care. The gather is part of ongoing manage- ment to maintain a healthy population of wild burros and horses on public lands in balance with their environ- ment. “By law, we manage a wide range of natural resources and uses,” Shoaff said. “Wild burros, and ensuring their future on healthy rangelands, are an important part of this.” The BLM will regularly post informa- tion about the gather on its Website. A public viewing and media day is scheduled for Sunday, September 26, 2010. Anyone interested in observ- ing the gather must contact the BLM Public Affairs Specialist Lori Cook at (928) 317-3243, by Friday, September 17, 2010. All attendees must drive their own four-wheel drive, high-clearance vehicle. DENTURES $350 Full Set QUARTZSITE SNOWBIRD SPECIAL: Same Day Dentures and 1 Hour Reline/Repairs!!
