The goal is to ensure that these families can stop worrying about whether or how they are going to be able to pay the increasing costs of day-to-day life and have a roof over their heads. The clients it serves are working families that are struggling. This includes nurses, teachers, first responders and hospitality staff, among others. It, however, does not serve -- nor refer to appropriate agencies -- people who are not working or not trying their best to make ends meet, the agency says. Family Promise wants to solve the issue of the workforce not having available housing that it can afford. It is working on several projects to help create that housing. Current housing projects • Parkside Cottages – 12 transitional housing units in Venice purchased in 2022. • Parkside Village – 2.5 acres purchased in Venice to build 54 affordable workforce housing units. • Looking for two acres in Venice to build a campus with Family Promise offices and affordable workforce housing units. • Looking for five acres or more in North Port to purchase to build affordable workforce housing units. • Looking for acreage in Englewood and Nokomis to purchase to build affordable workforce housing units. There are several ways to help Family Promise. Currently, the board of directors is full, but one can go to the website to apply to be on the Development Committee and help raise the funds needed to help make an impact on the community. The Development Committee plans and carries out four events each year that anyone can help with: • February, Mardi Gras event • May, KenDucky Derby event • August, new event for 2024 • October, Dream Walk Family Promise is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations from community members to do this work. It currently is in a capital campaign to raise funds to build housing. Go to familypromisessc.org and click on Housing Heroes Sponsorship under How You Can Help & Donate. Contact Family Promise to discuss how to proceed if you are interested in being involved, either as a client or as a donor.
