And sometimes be loud! By Ronald Dupont Jr. S peak up, be a mentor and lead by example. And sometimes, you need to be loud. These were two pieces of advice given to the women who packed a large conference room Sept. 22 for the daylong Venice Area Chamber of Commerce Women Powering Women conference. "Be true to yourself; stand up for yourself, said Janet Kahn, CEO of the Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County. "Clearly, we don't do it alone … It starts with passion." Kahn was one of the many speakers featured at the annual Chamber event, held this year at the Venice Golf and Country Club. The theme was "The Year of Impact," and that was reflected in the comments and personal stories of the speakers. Starting the conference was Stacie Herrera, founder and CEO of Osprey-based Herrera Psychology. She talked about growing up in the 1980s and how she had to learn to change her personal practices, going from "hurting to healing to helping." "I started to open up to new ways of thinking," she said. "…I leaned in and asked for guidance." PHOTO BY RONALD DUPONT JR.
