"But it's much harder in a community where the population of our various communities (of young people and people of color) is so small," he said. There also is the cost of tickets, often out of range for young people. Venice Theatre's single tickets for three random productions this year are $15 for youth, $22 for college students and $37 for adults. COMMITMENT TO THE ARTS With Geddie now at the helm, the organization will continue to promote DEI, as well as a commitment to community engagement. The key is "finding ways for our parents and our children to be invested in theatre at an early age so they, themselves, are like me," he said. "I don't know a time when I wasn't in the theater." Sandy Davisson, Venice Theatre's director of education and outreach, said in an email that Geddie has proven he has what it takes to be a strong leader: a combination of strategy and character. "He understands the practicalities of effective day-to- day business dealings, has a keen sense of the big picture of Venice Theatre, and is simultaneously focused on the long-term vision for the theater. He is committed to education and community engagement and is encouraging us to look at how VT can better serve our students and (the) larger community. "Kristofer will be an exceptional leader for this theater," said Chase, who served as executive director for about 28 years, in an email. And Chase's vision for Venice Theatre will still be felt even as Geddie takes the reins. "What he has done for the organization on a community level, on a state level, on a national level, an international level, is far above and beyond anything I could ever imagine," Geddie said. "I see no reason right now to change that vision, because it's strong, and it's incredible." And while he loves performing, Geddie said he realized his passion for behind-the-scenes roles equal or surpass that. "It was always so much fun to be on stage and performing, but the rehearsals and the processes to get there … there has to be a better way to do this," he said, laughing. "That's how my love for arts administration came about." 30 Discover Venice Photo by Tom O'Neill Venice Theatre executive director Kristofer Geddie videotapes an audition by Sandy Kenny for the part of grandmama for "The Adams Family" with resident musical director Michelle Kasanof- sky looking on.
