T7 BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT TV Media A "Top Chef" judge, writer, actor, adven- turing activist and food expert, Padma Lakshmi lives a life with no shortage of flavor. Her latest en- deavor invites you to join in her exploration of culture and cui- sine, taking viewers across the diverse American landscape in Season 2 of "Taste The Nation with Padma Lakshmi," stream- ing Friday, May 5, on Hulu. Part culinary tour, part history lesson and cultural exposé, Lak- shmi's genre-bending explorato- ry series marries politics with good eats, broadening our un- derstanding of the word "Ameri- can" along the way. She visits small towns, big cities and immi- grant communities across the country while highlighting how local and global cuisines influ- ence both how we eat on a daily basis and American culture at large. In a recent panel for Deadline, Lakshmi herself explained the series is really "a political show masquerading as a food show," stating, "The food is just the Tro- jan horse, because that's the lan- guage that people in the media and at home in America are used to me speaking." Lakshmi's goal was to produce a show that captured the reality of a diverse, multicultural Amer- ica, entertaining a similarly di- verse audience. Highlighting cultures and cuisines from around the world — all of which can frequently be found in fridg- es across the country — Laksh- mi challenges preconceived no- tions of the "American" identity by promoting togetherness and belonging from the universal heart of the home: the kitchen. Episodes include a trip to El Paso, Texas, for Mexican sweets; a deep dive into the Persian food of Los Angeles; a search for some of the best Greek food the country has to offer, tucked away in Tarpon Springs, Florida; Nigerian meals made to order in Houston; and a taste of the dis- tinctly delicious Appalachian cuisine of the South Mountain area, tucked between Pennsylva- nia and Maryland. The first season of the series was a runaway hit when it de- buted in 2020, and a second course was quickly announced. Production was initially delayed due to the coronavirus pandem- ic, but fans can rest easy know- ing that the show's return will still feature the same spunky, in- quisitive energy Lakshmi brought three years ago — just with a whole new slate of dishes to try.
