April 30 - May 6, 2023 WHATS UP! T11 don't know what movie it was. Can you help? A: You were watching "An- chorman 2: The Legend Contin- ues" (2013), and not making sense was kind of the point. This was, of course, the se- quel to the hit comedy "Anchor- man: The Legend of Ron Bur- gundy" (2004), which told the tale of a local news anchor in 1970s San Diego who feels threatened by the addition of a female co-anchor to his nightly broadcast. But that plot is mostly just an excuse to trigger nonsensical hi- jinks in the local TV news set- ting, with help from reporters played by Paul Rudd ("Ant- Man," 2015) and Steve Carell (of NBC's "The Office"). "Anchorman 2" goes deeper into this bizarre imaginary news community, which is where the fight scene you saw enters in. It happens near the end of the movie and is essentially a gang war among news teams from around the industry and the world. The hockey stick used by Jim Carrey ("Ace Ventura: Pet De- tective," 1994) is a reference to the fact that his character, like Carrey himself, is from Cana- da. There's also an ESPN team headed by Will Smith ("Men in Black," 1997), and entertain- ment reporters played by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who were a famous comedy-news team already, thanks to their work on "Saturday Night Live." Liam Neeson ("Taken," 2008) is there playing a host from the History Channel, and celebrity rapper Kanye West gets involved as an MTV host (with the film being set in the '70s, part of the joke here is that no one has heard of MTV yet). It's all supposed to be ab- surdist nonsense, but also a setup for a bunch of micro- jokes about various elements of the TV industry. Q: Who plays the female lead in "Big Trouble in Little China"? She looks so famil- iar. A: Those who know her just as Samantha on the long-run- ning comedy series "Sex and the City" may not recall that Kim Cattrall had a successful career as an '80s movie heart- throb first. Her most notable role in this regard was in the cult-favorite 1986 film "Big Trouble in Little China." She was playing Gracie Law, a young lawyer whose friend is kidnapped by the henchmen of an evil disembodied spirit op- erating in San Francisco's Chi- natown. What follows is a hy- per-stylized action-comedy di- rected by horror great John Carpenter ("Halloween," 1978). Cattrall followed this one up the next year with the hit 1987 comedy "Mannequin," in which she plays a department store mannequin come to life. These two films represented the peak of Cattrall's film star- dom. The roles began shrink- ing afterwards, until "Sex and the City" came along in 1998 to revive her career and turn her into an icon of outspoken, self- assured womanhood (this is what it is to be "a Samantha"). Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 Solution on page T23 Use the clues above and beside the grid to fill in the squares BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: I heard that a "Sherlock Holmes 3" with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law had been made. If so, when did the movie come out? A: What you heard is only true if you heard it from a time traveler from some undeter- mined time in the future. The fact is, a third installment of the modern Sherlock Holmes film franchise has been under devel- opment for years now, with no sign of when it will even start filming. That said, it really does seem to be a "when" and not an "if." The third film became an idea pretty shortly after the second one, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," was released in 2011. It was a smash hit, pulling in more than $500 million worldwide, which was more than four times its budget. And so a third one reuniting Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man," 2008) as Holmes and Jude Law ("The Talented Mr. Ripley," 1999) as Watson was a pretty at- tractive idea. The main stumbling block seems to have been Downey's busy schedule as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (he's played Tony Stark in 10 films since the first "Iron Man" in 2008). But he seems to be free of that now. However, according to Guy Ritchie ("Snatch," 2000), the director of the first two films, Downey is still the one causing the holdup. "Robert wanted to be in charge of this," Ritchie told Collider.com in February of this year. "The ball's in his court, so he's in charge of the script, he's in charge of the whole thing." Other updates have been shared along the way, with vari- ous people involved saying that the delay basically came down to perfectionism — no one wanted to do it until they had a perfect script to work from. This all suggests that another film is forthcoming. We just have to be patient. Q: I caught part of a movie that had Steve Carell, Will Smith, Tina Fey, Kanye West and Liam Neeson fighting in Central Park. Jim Carrey fought with a hockey stick. It made no sense, but I Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" HOLLYWOOD Q&A www.advancepestcontrolnwa.com Family Owned, Competitively Priced, Quality Service Since 1981 Rogers 479-636-5590 Springdale 479-756-1788 Eureka Springs 479-253-8967 PEST CONTROL TERMITE FERTILIZATION WEED CONTROL PRE-EMERGENTS APRIL 30-MAY 6, 2023 WHAT'S UP! 21
