T22 WHATS UP! March 12 - 18, 2023 The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Last week [Feb. 1], a Chinese spy balloon soared across America before finally being shot down by a stealth fighter. Just a reminder: we spend al- most $800 billion a year on de- fense and we used it to pop a balloon. Yesterday [Feb. 14], Dianne Feinstein — who is 89 years old — announced that she would not seek re-election in 2024. Well, yeah. She's almost 90. She shouldn't be running for senate, she should be run- ning for president. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Congrats to the Kansas City Chiefs on winning the Super Bowl [Feb. 12]. ... The final score was Chiefs 38, Eagles 35. People who called in sick to work: 19 million. Yeah, that's right — today [Feb. 13], a re- cord 19 million Americans were expected to miss work. Yep. We all woke up this morn- ing and chugged Gatorade as if we actually played in the game. That's right, Patrick Mahomes won the Super Bowl on an in- jured ankle, but fans can't show up to work because they drank too much White Claw. Today [Feb. 15], Nikki Haley of- ficially kicked off her presi- dential campaign and during her speech she called for poli- ticians older than 75 to have a mandatory competency test. ... Yeah, she said older politicians need mental checks and new ideas. Then, Trump looked at Biden like, "Wow, she's really going after you." Jimmy Kimmel Live! All of a sudden there are more UFOs than Chick-fil-As now. The Air Force shot down an- other unidentified flying ob- ject yesterday [Feb. 12], the third one in four days. I never in a million years thought I'd say this: Where the h—- is the Space Force? Why is that a thing? George Santos reportedly raised money for a recount that never happened, and back in 2017, he was interviewed by police in Seattle as part of an investigation into an interna- tional credit card fraud scheme. That one's a little con- fusing because when the cops showed up to interrogate him, he pulled out his own badge and was like, "Thanks, officer. Agent Santos. I'll take it from here." Can we please just fast- forward to the five-part Netflix documentary about the mild- mannered congressman who turned out to be a serial killer? This guy — he is the Michael Jordan of lying, and according to his bio, he's also "the" Mi- chael Jordan. Late Night With Seth Meyers In a video today [Feb. 14] an- nouncing she's running for president, former UN ambas- sador Nikki Haley said, "I don't put up with bullies, and when you kick back, it hurts them more if you're wearing heels." Whoa, what job does she think this is? Does she want to be president or teach Krav Maga? "When I fight for the middle class, I'll hold my keys so they stick out between my fingers." President Biden said yesterday [Feb. 15] that the back and forth with Republicans in his State of the Union address made him feel like he was, "Back on the playground." "So jealous," said Matt Gaetz. The Late Late Show With James Corden The Super Bowl was last night [Feb. 12]. ... Patrick Mahomes overcame a 10-point deficit at half-time to lead his team to win on a last-second field goal. He did all of this with a sprained ankle. Now, to be fair, the human body can do incred- ible things after witnessing a live Rihanna performance. A man in Bolivia tried to es- cape prison in a rather unusual way: he disguised himself as a sheep. He successfully broke out of prison, then put on a sheepskin jacket in an attempt to blend in as he crawled through nearby fields. ... Bah-d idea. Anyway ... [he was] killed by a wolf. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media 'Live' without Ryan: For six seasons, viewers tuning in to "Live With Kelly and Ryan" ex- pected to start their mornings with some fun banter between co-hosts Ryan Seacrest and Kel- ly Ripa. But that will soon change. During a taping of the Feb. 16 show, Seacrest surprised view- ers with an on-air announce- ment that he is leaving the No. 1 daytime talk show. "Working alongside Kelly over the past six years has been a dream job and one of the high- lights of my career," Seacrest said. "She has been an amazing partner, friend and confidant, and although we will always be a part of each other's lives, I will miss our mornings together." Seacrest first joined "Live" in 2017, and he originally signed on to host for just three years. Now, six years later, the "American Idol" host will be "transitioning out of 'Live' this spring," accord- ing to his Instagram, and he plans to move back to the West Coast to focus on other business ventures – including ABC proj- ects such as "American Idol" and "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," as well as his radio show on KISS-FM. He also sig- nalled his intention to open "three more Ryan Seacrest Foundation Studios in pediatric hospitals across the country." The news might have come as a surprise to viewers, but Seacrest indicated he and Ripa have been talking about this "for a long time." And maybe his last "Live" sign-off won't be the final one: on Instagram, Seacrest said he was "looking forward to coming back to guest host in the future." No official exit date was an- nounced at the time of writing, but they've already lined up a replacement co-host: Seacrest's soon-to-be-vacated chair will be filled by Ripa's husband, actor Mark Consuelos ("Riverdale"), and the show will be rebranded to "Live with Kelly and Mark." In his announcement, Seacrest made a point of ex- pressing his gratitude to those working behind the scenes. "I also want to thank [executive producer] Michael Gelman and the entire staff and crew," Seacrest stated. "We've made memories to last a lifetime, met some of the most incredible people and had the warmest welcome into the homes of so many viewers across America. It's been a memorable ride, and now I'm excited to pass the ba- ton to Kelly's 'real' husband, Mark." Missing 'Big Shot': It seems Disney+ decided a double shot of "Big Shot" is all it took to quench audiences' (and execu- tives') thirst for the sports- themed series. The comedy-drama, which stars "Full House" alumnus John Stamos, has officially been can- celled after just two seasons, along with fellow sophomore series "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers," which starred Lauren Graham ("Gilmore Girls"). "Big Shot" was created by prolific producer David E. Kel- ley ("Big Little Lies"), writer Dean Lorey ("Arrested Develop- ment") and actor/producer Brad Garrett ("Everybody Loves Raymond"), with Lorey also serving as showrunner. The sto- ry follows former NCAA bas- ketball coach Marvyn Korn (Stamos), who is given a shot at redemption when he accepts a coaching position at an elite pri- vate school for girls. The series, which premiered its second sea- son back in October, also starred Canadian actress Jessalyn Gilsig ("Glee"), Sophia Mitri Schloss ("The Kicks"), Nell Verlaque ("Bull") and more. As for "Game Changers," Sea- son 2 followed the Mighty Ducks hockey squad and their coach, Alex Morrow (Graham), as they headed to a super-com- petitive, summer hockey insti- tute run by former NHL player Colin Cole (Josh Duhamel, "Shotgun Wedding," 2022). Oth- er cast members included Brady Noon ("Boardwalk Empire") and Season 14 "America's Got Talent" singer Luke Islam. New buddy cops: If you're a fan of the 1975-1979 series, or even the 2004 comedy film led by "Zoolander" (2001) co-stars Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, here's some news that might be of interest: Fox is reportedly working on a "Starsky & Hutch" remake. According to Deadline, the project is being developed as a one-hour drama, and it would feature a female twist on the fa- miliar buddy cop format. Instead, the story would cen- ter on two female detectives, Sa- sha Starsky and Nicole Hutchin- son, who solve crimes in the town of Desert City "while stay- ing true to their friendship, their awesomeness, and somehow also trying to unravel the mys- tery behind who sent their fa- thers to prison 15 years ago for a crime they didn't commit," per Deadline. (No news yet on whether they'd be solving that mystery while driving a striped '76 Gran Torino). This is still in the early stages of development, with The Hol- lywood Reporter, er, reporting that Fox Entertainment presi- dent Michael Thorn was wait- ing for "at least two scripts from writers/showrunners Sam Sklaver ("Prodigal Son") and Elizabeth Peterson ("The Resi- dent")" before deciding wheth- er to move forward with it. Since Fox is no longer in the business of shooting pilots, any series order hinges on the quali- ty of the scripts developed. This script-to-series process also ap- plies to other projects that are currently in Fox's development pipeline, including the medical drama "Doc" from "Magnum P.I." writer Barbie Kligman.
