February 6 - 12, 2022 WHATS UP! T11 A: He hasn't stopped, but he's definitely in the choosy period of his career. Richard Gere ("Pretty Wom- an," 1990), an icon of '80s and '90s Hollywood glamour, has only had four screen roles in the past five years, and none of them was particularly splashy. His biggest recent turn was as a doctor treating three men who believe they're Jesus in the oddball 2017 indie film "Three Christs." The others were another couple of inde- pendent dramas (2016's "Nor- man" and 2017's "The Din- ner"). He also starred in the Starz miniseries "MotherFa- therSon," released in 2019. All that is to say he's still do- ing movies, but he's not too concerned with blockbusters. He also has his humanitari- an work to keep him busy — Gere has long been known as a philanthropist — and he seems to be getting ever more absorbed in that. He's been vocal about the plight of African refugees try- ing to reach Europe by boat, but he recently seems to have got- ten sick of using just his voice. While vacationing in Italy, he said he heard about a boat- load of refugees stuck in the Mediterranean in need of food and water, so he and his son chartered a boat, loaded it with supplies and met the ref- ugee ship themselves. This act led him to be a witness in an Italian court trial regarding the country's refugee policy. In a lengthy interview with Britain's The Guardian news- paper, Gere laid out his role in the trial, perhaps indirectly summarizing his current ap- proach to acting in the pro- cess: "I'm only here to speak for people who don't have a voice. It's not about me." Q: I'm confused: There were two action movies, called "Anna" and "Ava," released about a year apart, that look very similar. Are they related? A: "Anna" (2019) and "Ava" (2020) are two completely un- related films that just happen to follow almost the exact same plot and also happen to be titled after their protago- nists, whose names both hap- pen to start with A and are pal- indromes (they read the same both backward and forward). I won't insult you by saying this is a coincidence, but it's not really intentional, either. I can't explain the name thing, to be honest (it's like they're trying to be confus- ing), but the similarity of the plots puts them into a very successful genre that reaches back decades. Both films are about beauti- ful female assassins who are forced into the job by their cir- cumstances and are eventually hunted by their own people. That description also matches such hits as "Black Widow" (2021), "Colombiana" (2011) and the godmother of this sub- genre, "Nikita" (1990). The release of "Ava" in 2020, with its star-studded cast, in- cluding John Malkovich ("RED," 2010), Geena Davis ("Thelma & Louise," 1991) and Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty," 2012) in the title role, led to a number of pop culture think-pieces about why this story is so frequently told on the big screen and whether Hollywood should give it a break. They all reach roughly the same conclusion: The films are rarely very good, but they're always popular, so they'll likely continue. We can only hope they won't call the next one "Ada." A: One devoted fan base's loss is another's gain. Nathan- iel Arcand, who played Clin- ton Skye on the first two sea- sons of "FBI: Most Wanted," has returned to his other well- known role: Scott Cardinal on "Heartland." Arcand disappeared from "FBI: Most Wanted" partway through its second season with little explanation for his character's absence. It was months before Arcand an- nounced that he was officially exiting the show. He did so via an Instagram post that said simply, "Moving On. Moving Forward. Don't Look Back ... #clintonskye must say bye." He announced his return to "Heartland" in similar fashion — via cryptic Instagram posts. He began sharing photos of himself on the "Heartland" set, without comment. That left fans to just speculate about the comments until the show premiered on Canada's CBC network last October and his return was confirmed. Unfortunately for fans south of the border, the 15th season isn't yet available in the U.S. For a while now, the UPtv cable channel and UP Faith and Family streaming service have been airing "Heartland" after CBC premieres it. There's no announcement yet on when those channels will air Season 15. Between leaving "FBI: Most Wanted" and rejoining "Heart- land," Arcand managed to squeeze out a number of film roles, including a small role in the upcoming "Killers of the Flower Moon," directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese ("Goodfellas," 1990, to name just one of his masterpieces). Q: I haven't seen Richard Gere in a while. Has he stopped making movies?
