T7 BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media W ith Valentine's Day just around the corner, you can count on Food Network to serve up choc- olate recipes and dessert ideas in the lead-up to the most ro- mantic day of the year. Indeed, the Feb. 12 and 13 day- time lineups are filled with fun food ideas for the romantically minded, but with the Super Bowl being held so late this year, the cable network had to strike a balance between Game Day eats and Valentine's Day treats. That said, however, one Food Net- work show is deliberately mix- ing competition with romance. Tuesday's episode (Feb. 8) of "Chopped" is titled "Chopped for Love," which might give you an idea of what's in store. Ac- cording to Food Network, "eight single-and-ready-to-mingle chefs are set up with blind dates as their teammates for a quadru- ple date and culinary showdown all in one." This isn't the first "blind date" edition of "Chopped": A similar setup was featured in Season 28. That may seem like a long time ago, considering the show is cur- rently in its 50th season, but in reality, that earlier episode aired just six years ago, in 2016. And judging by the ratings and online comments, the blind date twist was well received by "Chopped" fans. If the concept doesn't seem romantic to you, keep in mind that cooking a meal together can actually be a good way of testing out a new relationship or assess- ing your compatibility. In real life, the simple act of meal plan- ning and gathering ingredients says a lot about one's personal preferences and openness to new ideas. Mind you, "Chopped" competitors don't have a say when it comes to the mystery ingredients, and this week's episode features an "aquatic aphrodisiac" for the ap- petizer, steak for the entrée, and passion fruit and matcha for the dessert. Acknowledging individual strengths and weaknesses is key to any successful relation- ship, but the paired-up "Chopped" contestants won't have had much time to get to know one another. Add time constraints and high-pressure elimination rounds and you have a potential recipe for both a dating and kitchen disaster, especially if a pair clashes over ideas, station cleanliness or fla- vor profiles. But even if it all goes wrong, it still makes for some fun, lighthearted TV fare. Ultimate- ly, the true winners of "Chopped's" Feb. 8 episode are those who will have formed an emotional connection during their time on the show ... al- though winning $10,000 isn't too shabby, either.
