Edge Six days after today it's Christmas so during these next days, retail stores will be busier than ever, online buying will be rampant, that last minute gift must be found and grocery stores will display everything under the sun for Christmas. The days before Christmas Eve, doubt could be stressful as fi nal preparation for Christmas Day will be made. Some will attend Christmas Eve candlelight and communion services in churches across Rutherford County to celebrate the birth of Christ. I will attend the service at Florence Baptist. It begins at 5 p.m. you're welcome to join us. Some churches will host Christmas plays and Santa will visit the children and adults will enjoy homemade snacks and fellowship. There is much anticipation not for children of every age. A long time ago, Christmas Eve for our family meant staying at home. We didn't have any family gatherings to attend and didn't have Christmas Eve services at our church. Christmas was the time at our house when Santa received his favorite homemade cake of the year. Instead of cookies it was a fresh coconut cake that took days, not hours, to make. A day or so before Christmas, we'd head to the back steps of our home and crack very hard-shelled coconuts with a hammer from the tool box. We stabbed them with ice picks and would drain the coconut milk through the holes into a jar. Mama would cut the coconut from the shells and as we got older, we'd do the grating with an old fashioned grater that could slice a layer of meat off a kid's knuckle if not careful. Fortunately that never happened. Christmas Eve night it was lights out early. My three sisters and I slept in the same bed on Christmas Eve until we no longer fi t. We'd quietly tell stories, hoping, yet also worried, that Santa might burst down the chimney and fi nd us with our eyes open wide. We could dive under the covers at the sound of one jingle bell, faster than lightning. The longest night of the year always ended no later than 5 a.m. when a hearty "ho, ho, ho" from our Daddy was our signal Santa had come. I vividly recall a shiny blue Western Flyer under the cedar tree one Christmas morning. There was ice on the ground that morning so I decided to take my fi rst ride on the new bicycle in the living room. I knew I'd made a bad choice after running over Daddy's toes. After Christmas morning and breakfast at home, we'd drive through the country and over the creek to Grandma's house. There we had Christmas dinner and opened gifts. Grandpa read the Christmas story from the gospel of Luke and he would pray. It was a good time. Christmas, characterized as the most wonderful time of year, sometimes isn't. For those who have lost loved ones to death this year, Christmas will be sorely different. It will be tough. For those sitting by the beside of a sick child or those visiting a family member in the nursing center who no longer recognizes you, Christmas Day suddenly doesn't seem so wonderful. For the countless numbers of people who are alone and those in rest homes who have no family, the Christmas season can also be tough. No one wants to be alone at Christmas. Many years ago I learned my Mother had a ministry at the nursing center near her home. She did this for years before I knew about it, and we talked every day. Once a week she visited those who had no family and when Christmas time came, with the help of her Sunday School class, she threw a Christmas party. Everyone got a gift and there was cake and punch for everyone. She taught me by example, including the truth that the greatest things in life aren't things at all. Ask that person who has lost a loved one, fi ghting sickness or who has just lost their way, what they want for Christmas this year. It will not be things. Before Christmas Day perhaps we can be bring Christmas to that person. One act of kindness will reap blessings all around. Merry Christmas.
