Why Does Kim Get Grenades? Taken 2 (Rated PG-13) by HEATHER GRIFFITHS Previously: An over-privileged blonde girl dared to travel to France where she was immediately kidnapped and sold to the highest bidder. Her father, a man with certain skills, went to rescue her and give her a good talking to. In order to rescue her he had to (Spoiler Alert!) kill almost the entire immigrant population of France. Apparently, as you will hear over and over and over again if you plan to sit through Taken 2 (91 minutes) these people were brothers, sons and husbands. And they have relatives who carefully plan every detail of a com- plex scheme to kidnap Bryan Mills and get even with him. Except not so much with the planning or the complexity. Basically, they wait for him to engage in some foreign travel, find out his ex-wife (Famke Janssen) and daughter (Maggie Grace) are with him, follow and grab as many of the Mills' as they can. He kills most of them, but the bad guys, led by Murad (Rade Serbedzija) overwhelm him with sheer numbers. Hilariously, in the midst of a Mexican stand-off, a gun to his wife's head, surrounded by the bodies of henchman, he is able to make a call to his daughter in full view of the bad guys and deliver in- structions in the weakest code ever devised. Seriously bad guys! Let me help you out. Tell him to drop the phone or you'll shoot him and his wife and call it a day. No? You'd rather let him have a leisurely conversation in which he explains to another intended victim exactly how to evade capture? Did this turn into a James Bond film? Well then you don't deserve to get revenge. One wonders why this particular family would travel outside America's na- tional borders since darling daughter can't even stay safe in the apartments of a wealthy friend in France, but okay. You can't live life afraid. You can however, live life young and stupid. Daughter Kim thinks her mom and dad are going to get back together and decides the best way to make that happen is to sit by an indoor pool in a hotel rather than absorb the Got Droopy Eyelids? Get Cosmetic Eyelid Rejuvenation! historical and architectural splendor that is Istanbul, while the 'rents go out on the town to get abducted. Too bad the kid- nappers know where she is! Luckily, her magic powers (there can be no other explanation) keep her safe long enough to run to her dad's room and sneak into his weapons chest. Where she gets grenades. And a gun. At which point I begin waiting for her to (A) shoot herself in the foot or leg and (B) blow herself up. Then she runs around the hotel in her bi- kini. Way to stay inconspicuous Kim! She runs and runs and runs. She steals some clothes from a hotel worker, so she can forget about that turn down service. Sadly, neither (A) nor (B) happens. sition that is both undignified and hilarious. Following his inevitable escape, there are several car chases through the streets of Istanbul, and considering how much pedestrian traffic is packed into those narrow streets I am think- ing at least a couple of innocent bystanders had a real bad day. The film stretches the bounds of reason and logic and really plays to the patriarchal ideology, with Neeson's depiction verging on a parody of tra- ditional masculinity. Overall, it's a spin on the first film, but not much of one. Good for Neeson, getting to play an action hero, I guess. Now showing at Wynnsong 7, Carmike 12 and Carmike Market Fair 15.
