Ragin’ Cajun to Corning Evangelist Rod Vincent, also known as the “Ragin Cajun” will be at Neighborhood Full Gospel Church, 901 South St., in Corning at 6 p.m. March 28 and 7 p.m. March 29 and 31. Vincent was born and raised a Catholic in South Louisiana and came to know the saving powers of Jesus Christ at 21. He has been preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ for more than 26 years and has ministered on television and radio programs. Without a doubt he has the tough of God upon his life and ministry. Come and receive a miracle in your life during this Holy Ghost annointed meeting. Easter at Abundant Life Abundant Life Fellowship will be celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ with a Sunrise Service, starting at 6:45 Easter Sunday. The service will be held outside the church, 21080 Luther Road, with a view of the mountains to the East. Seats will be provided. Immediately following the service, we will be serv- ing a complementary breakfast of ham, eggs, and pan- cakes provided by the church. Sunday School will be held immediately after break- fast, with a special morning worship service including communion. The public is welcome to attend. In our world, success is the name of the game; the higher the salary the better. If we compare ourselves to others we may be on the road to trou- ble. We may find ourselves envious of their respect and admiration in the community. We may become jealous of their possessions and if we are not careful, we can become filled with resentment and become critical of others and disenchanted with life. If we catch ourselves falling into this trap, it is time to rethink our posi- tion. We need to take the advice of scripture and renew our minds so that our lives reflect what is good and acceptable and the perfect will of God (Romans 12:2). Our goal is not temporary success based on stan- dards of this world, but successfully accomplishing what God has asked of us as individuals. Peter gives us an extensive list of what we need to live a successful Christian life. The ever straight for- ward person, he says if we do not have these items, we are "shortsight- ed or blind and have forgotten that God has "cleaned us up" (2 Peter 1:5- 9). He begins this list with faith. Every step in life, every decision, every plan of a Christian needs faith. We must trust that God works through us and is directing our lives or we will be left in a heap of confu- sion and tension (James 1:2-7). With- out faith our minds will become like ships thrown up into the air with the next wave and slammed down in the next trough. Our spirits become sea- sick and our hopes dashed. But with faith, we remain steadfast and the peace of God guards our minds. To faith he admonishes us to add virtue or moral character. We cannot truthfully say we have faith (a con- nection with God) without moral character. To do so makes us a liar because God does not tolerate habitu- al intentional sin (Numbers 15:30-31; 1 John 2:4-6). A relationship with God changes our moral character (2 Peter 1:4). Peter adds knowledge to moral character because it is its backbone. We need to understand the conse- quences of poor behaviors so that we have the strength and wisdom to make good decisions. We also need to understand the principles taught in scripture. They are a guide to our lives. Howev- er, Peter reminds us that knowing is not enough; we also need self control. Self control is what makes us able to apply what we know. However, spasmodic self control does nothing. If I resist eating rich foods once a week, I will still get clogged arteries. I need perseverance. I need to resist rich foods on a daily basis to remain healthy. It is a consis- tent life of resisting temptation makes me a healthy believer. But even perseverance is not suffi- cient without godliness. We study to show ourselves approved to God (2 Timothy 2:15). Our study teaches us how to follow God and resist the tra- ditions of men which can appear to be godly but are empty practices of self denial (Colossians 2:22). We study God’s word to learn what he says about himself so that we can become more like him. And to godliness, we need brotherly kindness so that we aren’t abusive with our knowledge and spiritually "beat up people." When we love someone we do not purposely harm them. We speak in loving and honest tones. We confront when circumstances call for it and First Baptist lights cross First Baptist Church of Red Bluff will have its cross at 13940 Baker Road lit up the evenings of Friday and Saturday April 2-3. The gate will be open so visitors can park at the field to pray, medidate or reflect on Easter. Sunrise Service will be celebrated there, gathering at 6:15 a.m. with the service starting at 6:47 a.m. Partici- pants should dress warmly and bring chairs. Refresh- ments will be served. Regular services will be at 10:15 a.m. at 501 Pine St. The historical committee is still looking for photos, clippings and any other memories for the church’s 150- year celebration June 4, 2011. Copies are accepted, call 527-4361. show mercy when it is appropriate. Even brotherly kindness is not enough because all these things with- out God’s love are empty sounding words and hollow acts (1 Corinthians 13). Without God’s love flowing through us our acts become destructive by nature. We are incapable of pure love on our own. It will always be tainted with some form of self motivation. Shirley Fay GodTalk Peter assures us, with these things (faith, virtue, knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love) we will produce an abundance of divine fruit. In other words we will be successful Christians. When our goal is to be spiritually successful, accomplishments in the world are merely tools to further what God has given us to do. If we have the opportunity to advance, we take that as a gift from God and move forward. If we do not have the opportunity to advance we equally see this as a gift of God directing our lives. As Paul wrote to the believers in the city of Philippi, "The Lord is near. Be anx- ious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanks- giving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Dr. Shirley Fay is a pastoral counselor in private practice in Red Bluff.
