Don lived in Chico and was known there as Mr. Christmas as he created a spectacular Christmas Scene each year in his yard. Many dozens of families and friends visit- ed the site of this annual celebration of the Christmas holiday. Today’s column is in tribute to Don Corrie who contributed greatly to the education of children and adults in Tehama County. Having met and worked with Don over a time period of more than 30 years I gained a superior education in regard to the needs of learners from Preschool through College levels. Don was gifted with many skills. One of them was the ability to lead a well known group of choir partic- ipants from the Tehama County Department of Education. Their melodious harmonies were heard by many Red Bluff citizens. Those participating or conversing with Don had to pay attention and think fast as his conversation was quick and to the point. At one time Don was a member of the Special Edu- cation Resource Network team, Tehama County Department of Education in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. It was my privilege to be a part of this team, hence having the opportunity to draw on Don’s knowledge and positive encouragement. It was Don who gathered together the first committee to work on Preschool Stan- dards. His far thinking on the learning steps for all children young and old alike has allowed positive growth. We were a hard working committee of five with public, private and spe- cial needs representa- tives contributing to the project. Much of that project has been embraced by the Learning Founda- tions for young children in state of California. Many local early child- hood learning teachers contributed to these standards over the follow- ing years. Thanks to Don’s consci- entious guidance our young chil- dren have profited in early learning. In more recent years I had the opportunity to share an office with Don. I had moved from one posi- tion to another and it called for a move of offices at the Tehama County Department of Education. Don offered half of his small office to me. He even insisted that I use half of his walled shelves for my books and materials. He was toler- ant of my many phone calls and I for his. I continued to learn many helpful educational strategies. Bend School Carolyn Barber He willingly presented mathematics training according to the State of California Standards to my adult Early Childhood Edu- cation R.O.P. students. He often threw in a few musical lessons on the Autoharp and engaged the students in funny and entertaining songs to relax them in their nervous pursuit of learning math. Every class of stu- dents expressed their thank- fulness for learning more about mathematics from Don even though he spoke at a rapid pace. I am thinking about getting out my autoharp to see if I can remem- ber how to play it. Don would prob- ably say, "You can do it, you can do it." An encourager he was. He was himself, a live long learner, an encourager of Christian faith and a constant educator. Don Corrie’s contributions to learning and dedication to his church will be long remembered by many. To his family and many friends condolences are expressed. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays.
