Saturday, March 27, 2010 – Daily News – 7A High school teachers object to Poizner’s claims SAN JOSE (AP) — Some teachers and students at the East Palo Alto high school where GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner taught are unhappy with his depiction of the school. In his campaign for the Republican nomination, Poizner often refers to his time as a volunteer teacher at Mount Pleasant High School during the 2002- 03 school year. In a new book, ‘‘Mount Pleasant,’’ Poizner says the high school had many gang members and pregnant teens. He says its nickname was ‘‘Mount Preg- nant.’’ During a recent debate with Republi- can primary rival Meg Whitman, Poizn- er said the school’s many gang members ‘‘just weren’t going to end up in a col- lege.’’ Poizner says the book fairly describes the school, including positive details about it. He told The Sacramento Bee that the issue has become politicized because of the campaign. High school administrators canceled a scheduled appearance there Friday because public school grounds cannot be used to support political candidates. Poizner’s campaign spokesman, Jar- rod Agen, said the candidate did not plan to campaign at the school. Rather, he said Poizner wanted to hand out copies of the book so students could read it themselves. He also wanted to answer any ques- tions from students about his time teach- ing there and his characterization of Mount Pleasant. Poizner also planned to speak with a class, as he has done regu- larly since 2003, Agen said. CARE TO COMMENT? At redbluffdailynews.com, scroll to the end of any story, click the link and type away.
