Always a fan favorite at the U.S. Open, and the 2003 champion, Andy Roddick headed into retirement with a 6-7 (1), 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-4 loss to Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina in the fourth round at Flushing Mead- ows on Wednesday. It was an emotional farewell for Roddick, who sat in his changeover chair, covering his face with a white towel, after sailing a running forehand long on the last point. He choked up during an on-court speech at Arthur Ashe Sta- dium, telling the crowd, ''Oh, wow. For the first time in my career, I'm not sure what to say.'' ''Since I was a kid, I've been coming to this tour- nament. I felt lucky just to sit where all of you are sit- ting today, to watch this game, to see the champi- ons that have come and gone,'' Roddick told the fans. ''I've loved every minute of it.'' The American surpris- ingly announced last Thursday, his 30th birth- day, that the U.S. Open would be his final tourna- ment. That impromptu news conference came a day before Roddick's second-round match, and he wound up winning that one, and a third- rounder, too, riding a wave of support in the stands. But those two oppo- nents were ranked 43rd and 59th, and the sev- enth-seeded del Potro, the 2009 U.S. Open champi- on, provided a far more daunting challenge — especially once he lifted his energy level and got his big, flat forehand cranked up. Red Bluff is coming off a strong showing against Oroville in Week 1, when the Spar- tans took control of the running game and enjoyed success through the air with senior quar- terback Garrett Sandow hooking up with wide receiver Mitch Fox for three touchdowns. While the team notched up four touch- downs through the air, look for it to continue running the ball and managing the clock. Red Bluff, which hasn't opened its season with a win since 2009, has a good chance to stay above .500. CORNING AT OROVILLE — 5:30 p.m. Cardinals: 1-0 Tigers: 0-1 Oroville 6 2010: Corning 39, Last two meetings 2011: Corning 34, Oroville a familiar feeling in Week 1, beating Las Plumas 35-12 in its sea- son opener. It was a closer result compared to a year ago, when Corning beat the Thunderbirds 52-0. Corning made no secret in the offseason that it would continue to lean on its running game. Colton Conoly put up 147 yards and Nathan Fultz rushed for 142. Fultz also had a 36- yard touchdown recep- tion on the night, on the Cardinals' only complete pass. Corning notes: The Cardinals enjoyed for the Cardinals with its yards by committee run- ning game. On defense, the Cardi- nals' relatively inexperi- enced defense held its own, giving up two touchdowns to an improved Las Plumas team. Defensive coordinator Bob Hall previously said he wanted the defense to initially work hard and not worry about mis- takes, which he said could be corrected as long as the effort is there. After a win on the road, the Cardinals should have something to work with, and work on, going back to Harrison Stadium to face Oroville. The Cardinals stay on the road against Oroville, which suffered a loss to Red Bluff in Week 1 and struggled contain the Spartans running game. This could bode well report: Oroville couldn't fig- ure out Red Bluff in its opener, but the Tigers should continue to rush through running back Jacob Thornton, who scored its only six points on a 57-yard touchdown run late in the fourth. Tigers' scouting Bluff held Oroville to just six points, and those points came late in the fourth quarter. And heady plays, such as a fumble recov- ery by two-way junior Greg Dufour in the sec- ond quarter, and an interception by senior Brandon Ragone early in the first quarter when On defense, Red Oroville was threaten- ing on Red Bluff's 23- yard line, shifted any momentum the Tigers hoped to attain. It did take Red Bluff a short time to feel the game out early in the first quarter, head coach Corey Hein said after the game. Oroville was having some success with its running game on its first possession, earning three first downs before Ragone's interception. By halftime, howev- er, the Spartans were in control and up 35-0. report: Cubs' scouting Anderson has opened the season with two losses, against Shasta and Division II defend- ing champion Orland. Under second-year coach Tim Patterson, Anderson's main attack will come on the ground through Jeremiah Emer- shy and Angelo Alle- gretto, according to a Record Searchlight report. And While Ander- son's history with Red Bluff shows two close games in 2009 and 2008, the Cubs are com- ing off three straight losing seasons. Senior quarterback Jason Cruickshank can throw and run the ball, according the Search- light, so the Indians have options in the backfield. 1B Thursday September 6, 2012 Week 2 Football Preview MediaNews Group photo by Jason O'Hanlon Corning's Justin Pye, right, tackles Las Plumas' Jess Little in Week 1. That's not to take away from some star performances from brothers Juan and Jose Rosales, and big defen- sive stops from Bryce Baer and Jose Alvarez. And while quarter- back Tommy Garcia connected with Nick Feser for a touchdown reception, look for the Warriors to continue favoring the run through its backfield, which comprises the senior brothers and junior Ale- jandro Guerrero. report: Happy Camp is com- Indians' scouting ing off a season-open- ing 22-14 win over Westwood, and has seven seniors on its 23=player roster. Compared to Mercy's 13, Happy Camp could have the reserves to out- last Mercy in a hard- fought game. Mercy, however, has been conditioning in the offseason for this sce- nario.
