Merriam-Websterde- fines the word lie as "1: to make an untrue state- ment with intent to de- ceive. And 2: to cre- ate a false or mislead- ing impres- sion." If I was to mea- sure the ef- fectiveness of a lie I would do so by judging how be- lievable it is. A lie must be believed in order for it to be effective. In most cases a lie is less about the ac- tual "statement" or "im- pression" and more about why there was "intent to deceive." For example, if I told my wife that I was going to be late coming home because of work and then used that as an opportunity to go golfing, she would be up- set. But if I used that same lie as an element of sur- prise, to purchase her a gift for being so amazing, we would find a very dif- ferent reaction. In the first example she would see that my intent to deceive her was selfish, but in the latter, my intent would of been to surprise her, and thus show my love. She would be less concerned about the "lie" itself and more focused on my rea- son behind it. I feel it is good to be able to judge "intent" in this way as it is the heart of the issue. So when Je- sus spoke of Satan in John 8:44 KJV He says, "for he is a liar, and the father of it." This beckons the ques- tion, why? Why is Satan so concerned about deceiving people? One could say that Sa- tan deceives in an attempt to achieve his hearts most sought after desire. We find in Isaiah 14:13-14 NKJV "For you have said in your heart: I will as- cend into heaven, I will ex- alt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the con- gregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High." There is only One who is worthy of such a position, in heaven, on the throne, reigning as The Most High. This of course is God, the Cre- ator and the sustainer of all things. In Satan's pride- ful desire to be like God, he chose, in his heart, to seek after something that is, by definition, wrong and in doing so he laid the framework for death and destruction. It was on this foundation that sin en- tered humanity when Sa- tan was convincing Eve to do something that God had specifically forbidden. In Genesis 3:5 KJV Sa- tan said to Eve, "For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." A better way to say it for the sake of un- derstanding would be to say: the pursuit to be a god is to sin against Him that is God. Paul addressed this very issue in the book of Romans when he said in chapter 1 verse 25, "who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and wor- shiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for- ever. Amen." The father of lies sells the lie that man is somehow equal with God and people "choose" to take this lie and will- ingly sacrifice Truth. It is Satan's oldest trick, to at- tempt to bring God down by bringing himself and man up. In order to para- phrase a point that Paul makes in Romans 1, I would make this state- ment: there is no worse judgement than God giv- ing sinners what they de- sire when they desire any- thing but Christ. It the greatest lie to ever exist, that pursu- ing anything but God is worth it. Jesus said in Mark 8:36 NKJV "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?" There is no profit, there is no rest, there is no peace, there is no heaven in such a mea- sly gain. If I compare the riches of the world against an eternity with Christ in heaven, it would be like comparing a drop of water to a trillion oceans that come from an endless well flowing from eternity to eternity. So why then? Why do people ignore God, who offers eternal life through Jesus Christ, in order to give their worship to things that will perish? I would like to plead with anyone reading this article. If you find your- self without Christ on judgement day you will not question His worth, rather, you will see how everything else was not worth it. Awake, come to the light and see His beauty. See His grace, feel His love, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved. JakeStephensisa passionate about Jesus Christ, preaching the Bible and sharing God's truth. The leader of the state's largest Ro- man Catholic archdio- cese bowed his head and prayed with a man who en- tered the U.S. illegally de- cades ago before the man walked into a federal build- ing to face possible depor- tation, a high-profile exam- ple of how religious leaders are responding to recent immigration enforcement actions under Republican President Donald Trump. Cardinal Joseph Tobin, the head of the Newark archdiocese, led a rally Friday to support Catalino Guerrero, portraying him as embodying the human cost of a broken immi- gration policy. Guerrero, whose immigration issues began before Trump took office this year, was given a 60-day extension to seek a stay of deportation. Guerrero, who's from Union City and has four children and four grandchil- dren, "puts a face" to what is often treated as "statistics or demons," Tobin said be- fore the hearing. "YoucanseewhatCatalino looks like, and you've heard howhehaslived,"Tobinsaid. "We're now going to ask the officialsdetermininghisfate to not only see his face but ours as well." The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has is- sued a steady stream of crit- icisms of Trump's restric- tions on refugees and immi- grants. Other faith groups, including a network of 37 Protestant and Orthodox denominations that work with the aid group Church World Service, are mobiliz- ing their congregations to fight Trump's policies. Hundreds of houses of worship around the country have joined the sanctuary movement, which provides support or housing to peo- ple facing deportation. Guerrero, who's 59, came totheU.S.illegallyfromMex- ico in 1991 and has worked consistently and paid taxes, owns his house and has no criminal record, Democratic U.S.Sen.BobMenendezsaid. Heappliedforawork permit several years ago but filled out a form incorrectly and mistakenly applied for asy- lum, Menendez said. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman said Guerrero was ordered removed from the U.S. in 2009 and must periodically report to ICE as a condition of his release. Attorney Cesar Estela, representing Guerrero, said Guerrero has diabetes and suffered a stroke several years ago. Estela said he will use the extension to file pa- perwork to seek to put Guer- rero on a path to get a green card. Guerrero has had his de- portation delayed primar- ily due to his medical condi- tion, Estela said. At a meet- ing with ICE officials last month, though, Guerrero was told to plan to surren- der his passport Friday. Es- tela said he sought a year's stay of removal for Guerrero on Friday but was denied. The next hearing is May 22. After leaving Friday's hearing,Guerreroenveloped oneofhisgranddaughtersin a hug. "He is a very good man. He has no reason to go back," said another grand- daughter, 10-year-old Liz- beth Perez, fighting back tears. "He is not a crimi- nal or anything. I feel really sad that they're doing this to him because he didn't do anything." Menendez said he hopes Guerrero's case and others like it around the country will spur renewed efforts at immigration reform. "I hope President Trump iswatchingbecauseCatalino Guerrero is not a bad hom- bre," Menendez said, refer- ring to a characterization made by Trump of people who would be targeted for deportation. Trump has said his immi- gration and refugee policies are necessary to protect the nation. Tobin has been crit- ical of Trump's policies and squared off against Vice President Mike Pence when, as governor of Indi- ana, Pence wanted to pre- vent Syrian refugees from settling in the state. Tobin was the archbishop of Indi- anapolis at the time. Last month, Tobin called Trump's executive order temporarily banning im- migrants from seven Mus- lim-majority countries "mis- begotten" and said it was "playing on irrational fears of people."
