Integrated into the landscape adjacent to Creekside Courtyard, "Ring Roll" is a sculpture com- posed of interlocking steel rings of varying diameters. According to the artists, "We worked to create a dynamic composition of intersect- ing curvilinear movement that would harmonize the environment and create a conceptual intersec- tion relating to the architecture of the school and the natural rhythms of the garden site." "Ring Roll" covers a 30-foot long, 8-foot wide and 10-foot high area within the Creekside Educa- tional Garden, which is near Colusa Hall. The artwork has three sections made from polished and lacquered steel. Each section was welded together and assembled into the overall composition on site. Viewable from the Creekside Courtyard and several campus pathways, the rings of the sculp- ture appear to move, even spin, as the viewer's perspective changes. The sculpture's abstract forms can be interpreted in numerous ways. Enhancing the garden site and the outdoor public space, the sculpture adds a dramatic and playful ele- ment to the landscape. The Petaluma-based team was selected from 15 respondents to a public request for qualifications from Northern California artists interested in creating a site-specif- ic sculpture for the recently installed garden. The artist team was one of three finalists asked to submit proposals for the $20,000 commission. The Campus Public Art Committee, a sub-committee of the Campus Planning Commit- tee, unanimously approved the selected artists' proposal. Funding for the project was based on sav- ings from the Creekside Courtyard project. "I want to thank the Campus Public Art Committee for bringing this dynamic piece of public art to our campus," said Lori Hoffman, vice president for Business and Saturday, August 18, 2012 – Daily News 3A Finance. "Our Campus Public Art Committee has made a wonderful selection," said CSU, Chico Presi- dent Paul Zingg. "This piece speaks to the harmony between the built and natural environments of our campus and conveys a sense of the energy and enduring values of an academic community." Grieve and Spector have been collaborating on public art projects since 2006, receiving numerous commissions and awards. Recent commissions include "Full Cir- cles," 2011, for the Visitacion Val- ley Public Library, a project of the San Francisco Arts Commission and "Cyclisk," 2010, for the city of Santa Rosa. In 2011, Spector and Grieve received an Americans for the Arts, Public Art Network Year in Review Award. will take place Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 3:30 p.m. during Chico Experience Week, which runs Oct. 5-14.
